“The salmon has become the favorite fish of the Spaniards throughout the year. And, of course, also at Christmas. The data show that Spaniards in Christmas celebrations prefer to eat salmon, especially smoked and Norwegian,” he says. Björn Erik Stabell, director of the Norwegian Sea Products Council in Spain.

The Ipsos online survey, in which some 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 65 have participated, therefore shows relevant information about a product that has an impeccable image among Spanish consumers thanks to its attributes. According to recent studies, among the benefits that Spaniards associate with Norwegian salmon90% think it's Healthy85% consider it “Yummy.” and 83% value that “That's it.easy to prepare“.

“The salmon is part of the usual diet of 61% of Spaniards, especially among the oldest in the home (73%), but also among young people with new trends such as sushi, or poke, which is how one in four Spaniards consume it between 25 and 45 years. In addition, almost half of families claim that it is the favorite fish of children,” he explains. Stabell.

Norway’s commitment to sustainability that the Spanish market values
The leadership of the fish “Made in Norway” is clear. As of the year, Norway has exported fish and seafood to Spain of value 676 million euros. This figure is higher than 545 million euros for the same period last year and 478 for the year 2020. “The export value to Spain is the highest of all time“, Stabell has valued.

Salmon is the most relevant category. The volume of sales in Spain of this species, coming from all origins, stands at 110,000 tons each year and more than 97,450 tons come from Norway, with a market share of 88%. According to the NSC data, Salmon's per capita consumption is 2.3 kilos per person per year in the country, after an exponential increase of 32% in the last three years.

Quality, food security, animal welfare and traceability from the origin are the “successful” axes of Norwegian products such as the Salmon. Not forgetting your commitment to sustainability. And it is that the Norwegian coast, which enters the Arctic, provides the ideal conditions for these fish, which thrive in cold waters, where the salmon lives in its natural environment.

Thus, for example, the Coller FAIRR Índex, which ranks the most sustainable animal protein producers in the world, has just crowned back three Norwegian aquaculture companies at the top of the table. Of the four companies identified by the index as “low risk” against a number of factors that demonstrate sustainability, three are Norwegian aquaculture producers. The Coller FAIRR Index (this is the only comprehensive assessment in the world of animal proteins) considers a variety of factors that contribute to the overall score of a protein; from greenhouse gas emissions, water use, biodiversity, animal welfare and antibiotic use, to working conditions and governance.

The Norwegian Sea Products Council (NSC) depends directly on the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and is responsible for publicizing the differential values of national references. The NSC is based in Tromsø and has local offices in 12 of the world's most important Norwegian fish and seafood markets: Sweden, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Japan, China, Singapore and USA. In addition to Spain.
