In Spain about 131,000 people die a year for problems associated with obesity. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity, according to the Spanish Association of Surgery. Obesity is related to up to 160 different diseases

17% of Spaniards suffer from obesity, according to data from the National Statistical Institute (INE) of 2017.

In addition, it is estimated that in 2050 this figure will increase to 25% of the population. Overweight is an epidemic and one of the main problems of the 21st century and, moreover, already supposes the first cause of nontraumatic death in Spain.

In the world, at least 2.8 million people per year die from problems associated with adiposis, according to the World Health Organization; in Spain the figure is approximately 131,000. In addition, the percentage of Spaniards suffering from morbid obesity is close to 3% and the trend is upward, according to the Spanish Society of Study of Obesity (SEEDO). On the occasion of World Day of Obesity, on 4 March, the Spanish Association of Surgeons (AEC) wants to focus on the problems associated with morbid obesity, a disease that increasingly affects more citizens and whose solution passes, in most cases, by the surgical intervention.

Bariatric surgery, currently, is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity. It does not only reduce weight, but also improve associated diseases. This intervention has shown that it increases people's survival and improves their quality of life. Since the 1990s it is established that patients with body mass index above 40kg/m2 have indication of surgery, as well as those with BMI above 35kg/m2 and some obesity-related disease. Patients with obesity and other diseases need to lose weight in order to improve prognosis or evolution (patients with orthopaedic or traumatic problems, potential transplant candidates, etc.).

Uninvasive surgery
Although it is a major surgery, medical and technological advances, as well as minimally invasive approaches, make the rate of complications and mortality today equal to other more general procedures such as bladder surgery or appendicectomy. These are surgeries that allow patients to be admitted only 48-72 hours and that in 2-3 weeks they can be reinstated to their routine life.

Another important aspect is that more and more information about obesity, the alterations that originate it and the changes that they imply in the organism. This allows for more patient-friendly procedures. In this way it is possible to achieve maximum effectiveness with the least aggression.

According to the doctor Amador García Ruiz de Gordejuela, specialist in General Surgery and Aparato Digestivo y Coordinador de la Section de Obesidad Mórbida de la AEC y surgeon del Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, “more than 80-85% of patients significantly improve their quality of life after surgery; from women with fertility problems, that two or three years after surgery can be mothers, to patients who have to live sleeping with a machine to avoid apneas, in which after just 6 months they can be removed this device and sleep again at night; parents who can replay with their children without drowning; or people who are vetoed by the sport.”

Over 8,000 interventions per year
In Spain some 8,000 bariatric surgeries are performed each year. From the AEC work is done not only to strengthen training and increase the quality of treatments, but also to raise awareness of the importance of these procedures. With surgery it is possible to improve the quality of life of patients as well as save money to the public age, as the costs of treatments of associated diseases are reduced and the complexity of future complications in these patients is diminished.

Benefits
Benefits are multiple; the most important in addition to gradual loss is improvement and even healing some of the overweight diseases. Intervented patients often improve, almost immediately, in the control of sugar, blood pressure or lipids; they also gain in mobility and quality of life. Intervented patients increase their survival and significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (infarts, strokes, etc.)

Associated diseases
Obesity is related to up to 160 different diseases. The main ailments related to overweight are those of the so-called metabolic syndrome, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipemia (hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia), or sleep apnea. It is also related to other diseases such as polycystic ovary, sterility, endocranial hypertension, arthropathies, depression, etc.

About the Spanish Surgeon Association
