Causes Of Blood Clotting

The blood flows through the veins and arteries supplying nutrients to cells, which allows them to function properly and remove the waste products that are produced due to metabolism. In case the blood vessels begin to leak or they are damaged, the blood has the ability to clot and repair the damage caused.

The clotting mechanism consists of numerous factors, which ultimately leads to clot, whenever needed. The blood clot is known as thrombus in the medical term. Superficial phlebitis is the blood clot that forms in small veins that are close to the surface of the skin. It results in localized redness, swelling and pain. However, it rarely causes any complications and needs minimal treatment. Deep vein thrombosis is the blood clot that forms in the deeper and larger veins.

Sometimes blood clots might break away from the original location and can result in damage elsewhere in the body. The blood clot is essential, as it helps in repairing the injured blood vessel. However, these clots create problems, when they are formed inappropriately. Different types of risk factors and illnesses lead to the formation of blood clots.

Different Causes of Blood Clot

Blood Clots in Veins

The blood clots that are formed in the veins of legs and arms are known as deep vein thrombosis. Pregnancy, prolonged immobility, smoking, inherited blood clot disorders and hormone therapy are some of the risk factors.

Prolonged automobile and airplane trips reduce the muscle movement and hence the risk of blood cot increases, as the blood tends to collect in the lower parts of the body due to gravity. Blood clots are formed, when the person doesn’t walk or stand at regular intervals.

Arterial Blood Clots

There might be severe blood clots due to gradual narrowing of arteries by plaque. The clotting cascade begins when the plaque ruptures. The risk factors for blood clots in arteries are usually associated with peripheral vascular disease, heart attack and stroke.

Blood Clots in other parts of the Body

The blood tends to clot, when it leaves the blood vessels. When these clots pass through the vagina, urine and stool it shouldn’t be ignored. This might indicate a problem or there might be an explanation for the bleeding like for instance, bleeding is usually noticed in bladder infections.

However, when the blood clots are seen in the urine, it should not be presumed as a bladder infection. There are many reasons for this kind of bleeding like it can arise due to bladder tumor or there might be irritation in the lining of the bladder due to various reasons (ex. Cancer radiation therapy). When the bleeding is more, the clots will be formed in the bladder and passed in the urine.

Rectal bleeding or blood in stools is not normal and must be thoroughly investigated. While anal fissures or hemorrhoids may be the cause, it might also occur due to a range of ailments such as diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, infections, tumors etc. If the bleeding is more, it results in blood clots, which might be removed during the bowel movement.

Recent surgery, obesity, heart trouble, bruise or bad bump, broken bone (leg, pelvis or hip), cancer, old age (above 65) are some of the other causes that might lead to blood clots.
