Causes Of Recurring Hiccups

Hiccups are notoriously common and occur when the diaphragm contracts and causes the throat to spasm involuntarily. Hiccups can be very annoying and embarrassing, as they tend to strike at the most inopportune moments.

They are also relatively harmless. Getting frequent hiccups is not a very good sign and could indicate something more serious. Understanding the causes of frequent hiccups can help to determine the course of action one should take.

Causes Of Recurring Hiccups

Excess Air

One of the most common reasons for frequent hiccups is the intake of excess air. This happens when you eat very fast or guzzle down your drinks and water. This causes the build up of excess air in your food pipe causing you to hiccup.

Nerve Irritation

Have you ever experienced severe bouts of hiccups after eating spicy and chilly food? Blame it on the phrenic nerve. This nerve travels from the brain to the diaphragm by passing through the food pipe. Eating chillies can irritate the diaphragm and the nerve and cause you to hiccup.

GERD

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a condition, which causes your stomach acids and food to be regurgitated and pushed up back into the food pipe. This causes severe wet hiccups. These hiccups can be curbed by eating less, eating frequently and avoiding intake of hot and spicy food.

Consumption of Carbonated Beverages

Consumption of aerated drinks may bring on a sudden attack of hiccups. At times, certain alcohol drinks like beer when had rapidly may also bring on an attack of hiccups. All these should be had in moderate quantities so that recurring hiccups do not arise.

The Use of Straws

The use of straws can be very deceiving. People tend to gulp down more liquids when using a straw because they are not able to discern the amount of fluid being consumed. As a result, people tend to gulp in large quantities of air and this can frequently lead to recurring hiccups. Blog sobre Ajedrez

Emotional Causes

Many people are known to experience hiccups due to excessive anxiety and stress. Certain emotional triggers may bring on an attack of hiccups. Weeping uncontrollably may also cause you to hiccup. In such cases, treating the person with anti-anxiety drugs and anti-depressants may help to curb the hiccups.

Neurological Causes

In very rare cases, recurring hiccups can be attributed to neurological causes like brain tumours, infection in the brain or spinal cord, stroke or certain degenerative diseases.

In such cases, the person needs a detailed investigation in order to be able to form an accurate diagnosis. Head injuries after an accident like a concussion can also lead to a severe case of recurring hiccups. Such cases should be dealt by doctors with care.

Dehydration

Sometimes severe dehydration leads to a loss of crucial salts like sodium and potassium in the body. This can lead to very severe hiccups. Other changes in the electrolyte levels can lead to large hiccups. Mild hiccups can be easily relieved by consuming some water. Water in most cases helps the hiccups to subside.
