Home Remedies For Hay Fever

As the name implies, hay fever is not caused by an allergy to hay and there is no fever. It is caused by allergic reactions to substances floating in the air. Airborne particles like dust, pollen from grass and plants, allergens from fungi and dander shed by pets and animals cause hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

The immune system assumes these harmless particles to be harmful ones and releases certain chemicals that inflame the mucous membranes of the nose, sinuses and throat and cause the common cold like symptoms such as headaches, sneezing, runny nose and congestion in the nose as well as the sinuses.

Often there is intense itching in the nose and throat and the eyes become watery. Hay fever usually affects children and young adults. Some people have mild symptoms but others can suffer to such an extent that they are unable to perform their routine tasks.
