“Physical Education is a fundamental pillar in the Logos College and for the integral development of students”

Next 20 November Child Daya day marked by the United Nations to promote the education, well-being, games and leisure of children. Therefore, Carlos Carretero, Coordinator of Activities and Professor of Physical Education and the Logos College, international and bilingual school, located in the northwest of Madrid, highlights the importance of sports education within comprehensive education that benefits not only the physical health of children, but also the emotional and social.

The American Psychologist Howard Gardner was a pioneer in developing and developing the theory of 8 multiple intelligences as a basis for the integral development of any child or adolescent. This theory defends that humans have an infinity of capacities and potentials, which are gradually developed according to context, culture, education, family, etc. In this way, the actions and performance done both in education and in sport are fundamental to the development of these intelligences, and therefore of integral development.

Carlos Carretero, coordinator of activities of the Colegio Logos, international and bilingual school located in the northwest of Madrid, notes that in Spain “more and more value is given to the subject of Physical Education and the benefits it provides are recognizedsignaling it as one of the fundamental pillars for the formation and integral development of the students.” Even so, “I think that this recognition should be reinstated, not only with words and yes with greater investment in infrastructures and resources, that will help future athletes feel sport as one of the fundamental parts of their education and a healthy and balanced life.”

“Physical activity in childhood generates a number of benefits that include healthy growth and development of the cardiorespiratory and muscle-skeletal system. Also the maintenance of caloric balance, therefore, a healthy weight, the prevention of cardiovascular disease risk factors such as hypertension or high blood cholesterol content, and the opportunity to develop social interactions, feelings of personal satisfaction and mental well-being,” he adds.

In the face of the alarming increase in childhood obesity, the Initiative is born in Spain NAOS (Strategy for Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention) launched by the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, which is based on the overall objective of adopting a life-cycle perspective for the prevention and control of obesity, and includes recommendations for action in four areas:

1. Family and Community Area: The activities focus on information campaigns and the media, as well as on the development and dissemination of materials aimed at promoting healthier eating habits and active lifestyles in children and adolescents.

2. School area: the proceedings encompass the inclusion of knowledge and skills related to diet, nutrition and physical activity in the academic programme. Also of criteria for the menus that are served in the eaters, as well as for the products, location and advertising of the vending machines.

3. Business area: Cooperation agreements have been signed between the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs and the private sector for the prevention of obesity and overweight,

both from the food industries, as well as from catering companies and catering chains, developing and promoting healthier products that contribute to healthy and balanced food.

4. Health area: actions have been designed to strengthen the important role developed by pediatricians and other health professionals in the prevention and early recognition of excess weight.

“At Colegio Logos we are aware of the current problem with child obesity. Therefore, we combine balanced menus that we made in our own kitchen to create healthy habits in feeding children, with an excellent sports education. We do this through a program of sports activities within school hours, which add more than 5 hours per week, and that our students can choose between: tennis, skating, basketball, swimming, fencing, soccer, volleyball, paddle, dance, rhythmic gymnastics, etc. with which we extend the hours of 'sport time' and also have competition teams that participate in the different leagues", says Carretero.

Unfortunately, after the confinement, “the lack of sports practice has been noticed for so many months, evidenced in many cases by the rise in weight, and also by the loss in much of the physical level they already had. The use of the mask and the social distance are also elements that make it difficult to return to work in the sports field, preventing many of the lost physical abilities from recovering as soon as possible.”

Regarding the ‘new normality’, “we have had to make adjustments respecting the protocols established by the Community of Madrid, first of all, using only outdoor facilities, we have also temporarily closed the use of clothing and clothing changes. We disinfect at the end of each class all the material used and respect the established safety distances by adapting the games and sports that we normally practice so that they comply with the rules and protocols.”

The College Logos is a international and bilingual school, located in the northwest of Madrid, which is positioned among the top 5 schools in Spain, according to the Ranking El Mundo 2020. A school based on internationalization, education with values, educational innovation and sports spirit.
