Only 45 per cent of people with diabetes have been trained by health professionals. Patients claim to participate in the decision-making of the National Health System. Open debate today on a webinar organized by the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FEDE)
Diabetes training saves costs to the health system and improves the quality of life of patients, according to experts in diabetes, health economy and care management gathered today by the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FEDE) in an online session to analyze the role of patient associations in Health. The webinar “EnRédateDiabetes: the value of associations and their role in the health system” is held this afternoon from 18:30 hours in open, for patients, health professionals and general public interested in the field of Health.
The objective of this online event is to share essential information on diabetes control, highlighting the training and support work of the associations to improve their quality of life and save costs to the health system, especially in the current situation of collapse of primary and hospital care. In particular, according to FEDE data, people with uncontrolled diabetes and without access to diabetological education may incur an added cost of up to €500 per person per year, especially in hospitalizations, emergencies and visits to the specialist. Despite this, according to Aureliano Ruiz Salmón, the current president of FEDE, “only 45% of people with diabetes have been trained by health professionals.”
To assess the impact of patient associations on the quality of care, the webinar will have the presence of experts in health economy and health management, patient care and diabetes treatment and prevention. Thus, Antonio Pérez, president of the Spanish Society of Diabetes (SED); Álvaro Hidalgo, professor of the University of Castilla – La Mancha; Marc Caballero, nutritionist of the Fundación Dieta Mediterránea; and Paloma Casado, deputy director general of Humanization of Assistance, Bioethics, Information and Patient Care at the Council of Health of the Community of Madrid. It will close the Aureliano Ruiz Salmón, who has said that, “with such events, we want to increase the visibility of federations and associations of diabetes patients, a member of FEDE, who work in a totally altruistic way, performing every day a vital function for patients and their families. That is why we also insist on society, on the importance of associationism, and on the need to give them greater participation in decision-making within the National Health System.”
This webinar is framed in the campaign “Remember the associations. Surrender the Patients” launched by FEDE to value the role of associations of patients with diabetes. Partnerships that provide support and support to patients, diabetes training and the organization of activities that contribute to their improvement both physically and emotionally. Through this FEDE campaign it also seeks to strengthen its commitment to patients and achieve greater support from society, the Public Administration and the different entities involved with the associations.
