A clean home does not have to equal a toxic home anymore. Make the cleaning products you use around the home for a truly safe and healthy lifestyle.

Diy projects to try before you buy everyday products anyone can make 3 Making liquid laundry detergent is super easy. But be prepared for an arm workout – unless you use an electric mixer.

1. Laundry Detergent

While liquid laundry detergent requires more effort than powder detergent, my DIY liquid laundry detergent is the easiest method I’ve tried. The all-natural recipe is Borax free and includes only ingredients with the highest safety rating, as ranked by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Follow the detailed directions to learn How to Make Liquid Laundry Detergent right here on DIYH.

2. Mirror and Window Cleaner (Windex Alternative)

Windex is popular for cleaning mirrors and windows, but the product is also toxic. All you really need is vinegar and/or lemon to polish these shiny surfaces. Mix warm water with lemon juice in a spray bottle or create a paste of baking soda and water for filthy messes.

My favorite white vinegar infusions include lemon, orange, lime, basil, thyme, pine, and cinnamon.

3. All-Purpose Cleaning Spray

Vinegar is one of the best natural cleaners. It destroys bacteria and viruses, disinfects, and is as effective as bleach. An all-purpose cleaning spray with vinegar offers other benefits as well, like zero-waste and low-maintenance.

To make the cleaning solution, infuse vinegar with lemon (or your favorite alternative, like basil) for a few weeks. Add the mixture to a spray bottle, mixing with equal parts water. Use the spray to clean nearly any surface except natural stone (granite, marble). Mix up more spray from the jar as needed.

4. Toilet Cleaner

Toilet cleaners are harsh. For a natural alternative, you have many options. Try using 1/2 cup of lemon juice to clean the toilet bowl. Combine the lemon juice with white vinegar or Borax for a deep clean. Or, follow my 3 Easy Toilet Cleaning Hacks for tips to polish the throne inside and out.

Tip: Fill the toilet tank and bowl with white vinegar. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub dirt and grime away in moments.

DIY room spray is a non-toxic alternative. The best part is that you can customize the scent. You could even use it as a pillow spray to aid sleep or calm anxious pets.

5. Room Spray (Febreeze Alternative)

Air fresheners like Febreze or Glade cause headaches and other harmful side effects due to the artificial scent, which is code for chemicals. Homemade room spray refreshes the air in any part of your house. You probably even have all the ingredients you need in your pantry.

Make a DIY room spray by adding a small amount of sea salt (or baking soda) to an amber glass spray bottle. Drop-in your favorite essential oils, and fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. Shake to combine and give the bottle a quick shake before each use for the best results.

6. Carpet Powder

Your carpets require regular cleaning, and then there are the occasional spills to clean up. Remedy any mess with a DIY carpet cleaner.

I combine baking soda with essential oils and sprinkle the powder directly on my carpets. The vacuum takes care of the rest. You can learn more about making carpet powder on the blog. I also make a liquid spray from vinegar, baking soda, and Castile soap for last-minute spot cleaning.

Non-toxic DIY liquid hand soap only requires three ingredients. Combine this recipe with a foaming pump for the best results.

7. Hand Soap

Soap is surprisingly easy to make at home. You don’t have to create soap bars either!

Natural DIY liquid hand soap takes a few minutes to whip together. Combine liquid Castile soap with a tablespoon of your favorite carrier oil, 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oils (I like tea tree, lavender, or lemon), and water. See my hand wash tutorial for other oil alternatives.

8. Dish Soap

Washing dishes is a daily occurrence. Most people, especially large families, run through dish soap quickly. Save money by making DIY dish soap. It cleans just as well and for only a fraction of the price.

Similar to my hand soap recipe, dish soap is made from Castile soap, water, and essential oils. Some recipes use Sal Suds instead of Castile soap – like this wonderful tutorial from Wellness Mama.

Dishwasher detergent powder is so quick and easy to make, you can whip up the amount you need every week. Estados para Whatsapp

9. Dishwasher Detergent

Did you know the chemicals used to prevent bacteria and hard water spots on dishes are also highly toxic? Both powder and liquid dishwasher detergent is a fun and simple project. It takes a couple of minutes to make and the result is much more eco-friendly.

I use my powder dishwasher detergent recipe every week. Combine equal parts of baking soda and washing soda in a large glass jar. Drop your favorite essential oils (I use lemon) on top and shake thoroughly. Need more scrubbing power? Add a bit of coarse sea salt.

10. Bug Spray

Bug season arrives when the warm weather arrives each year. Most people prepare by spraying chemicals around their homes. But a simple homemade bug spray protects you, deters pests from your home, and even handles sensitive plants.

For my homemade bug spray recipe, I mix Castile soap and peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle. Fill the bottle with water. Shake the bottle before each use. You can also add in witch hazel astringent, vinegar, or a touch of neem oil for extra bug-killing power.

Personal Care Products

Everyday personal care products are those that you use for yourself, including skin and beauty products. The industry is full of toxins. From chemical fragrances to acne-causing toxins, the ingredients in many store-bought personal care products may make you look and feel worse.

1. Perfume and Cologne

Men’s and women’s fragrances are full of toxic chemicals. Even the expensive bottles of perfume or cologne on department store shelves are not much more than essential oils and binders in a bottle. Creating your own fragrance is painless and only costs a fraction of the price.

There are many ways to make personal fragrances. Wellness Mama offers an awesome and detailed herbal perfume DIY tutorial. But their recipe is a bit more detailed. If you’re a beginner, I suggest mixing any of your favorite essential oils and carrier oils in a spray bottle (similar to my room spray recipe).

Fill the bottle half-way with the carrier oil, then add the scents you enjoy. Shake the bottle for 30 seconds to combine and sniff to make sure you enjoy the smell. Experiment with the number of drops to personalize the ingredients. I typically use about 4-ounces of fractionated coconut oil and around 20-30 drops of essential oil (lavender is my go-to scent).

2. Deodorant

Deodorant and antiperspirant use is linked to breast cancer for a reason. Traditional deodorant sticks are another product full of toxins. They’re also packed into plastic packaging that’s nearly impossible to recycle.

Organic deodorant still reduces sweating and odor, without causing harm to your or the environment. For this DIY, you need a double boiler. Follow the steps to make natural deodorant on Don’t Mess with Mama.

3. Shampoo

DIY shampoo only takes seconds to make. Combine this recipe with a foaming pump for a shaving cream and shampoo 2-in-1.

Store-bought shampoo is full of chemicals. While many people turn to the no poo method as a natural alternative to replace regular washings, you can make a DIY shampoo that lathers and cleans.

The best DIY shampoo recipe I’ve found so far works well for all hair types. All you need is liquid castile soap, jojoba oil, water, and your essential oils of choice.

Dry shampoo is easy to make at home too, whether you have light or dark hair. Check out the tutorial on Wellness Mama.

No time to make shampoo? DIY poo not so great for your hair type? Try Aloe Vera shampoo and conditioner . The rosemary and peppermint help hair grow faster and stronger.

4. Conditioner

Everyday hair conditioner and leave-in hair masks are among the most expensive beauty products. But there are many hair-nourishing ingredients hiding in your kitchen pantry you can mash up and apply to boost moisture, such as:

  • Avocado

  • Yogurt

  • Egg yolks

  • Honey

  • Banana

  • Mayonnaise

  • Coconut oil

Mash the ingredients into a smooth texture, as needed. Apply to your hair from mid-length to ends. Cover with a shower cap or towel. Leave the conditioner in place for between 20 minutes and a couple of hours, then rinse with warm water.

Humblebee & Me also offers an interesting creamy hair conditioner DIY tutorial worth trying as well.

There are tons of face wash options available! Check out our list of DIY natural face wash recipes for every skin type to find the right one for you.

5. Face Wash

A homemade face wash is gentle and moisturizing, as most recipes avoid harsh soaps. DIY face wash cleans your face without stripping the moisture you do have. It has no harmful toxins or chemical fragrances.

My DIY face wash recipes cover every skin type and ailment. How you make each cleanser varies, so experiment to find the right one for you.

6. Body Wash

Organic body wash ditches the toxins in other soaps. But it costs crazy amounts of money in regular stores. Making body wash to lather up in the shower with is much more affordable.

You’ll find an awesome homemade body wash recipe on the Tried and True Blog. The recipe is similar to my DIY shampoo recipe, but with glycerin added to thicken the mixture.

7. Face and Body Scrubs

Make your buy your homemade sugar scrubs on our website today!

Exfoliating is a crucial part of skincare. It lifts dead skin cells away before they clog pores and help your skincare products work to the best of their abilities. Sugar and salt are natural ingredients with a granular texture to buff away dead skin fast, making them common in homemade options.

I have an easy DIY sugar scrub recipe for every skin type. Each tutorial uses different ingredients. But they all make my skin feel soft and refreshed. We even sell our homemade scrubs in our store.

8. Lotion

If you have dry skin or need moisture help in the winter, try an all-natural body butter recipe. Lotions, especially a shea body butter, costs big bucks in most stores. Plus, they’re full of preservatives and other harmful toxins.

Try this homemade body butter recipe from the Turquoise Home. It’s chemical-free and safe for all ages. You’ll need organic shea butter, coconut oil, either jojoba or almond oil, and your essential oils of choice.

9. Face Moisturizer and Serums

Diy projects to try before you buy everyday products anyone can make 13

Many of the ingredients you need to make moisturizer, serum, or face mist may already be in your kitchen pantry.

In skincare, it’s better to prevent than attempt to cure. But there are common ingredients in skincare products that irritate and inflame your skin. A regular skincare routine with natural ingredients keeps your face smooth and poised.

My facial spray recipes work as a face mist when you need to refresher up after exercise or travel, make-up setting spray, toner, facial serum, or even a face moisturizer with healing properties if you’re in a pinch.

10. Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth daily is important to dental care. But there are a few problematic ingredients in common toothpaste, one of which is a serious hormone disruptor.

Homemade toothpaste is challenging. Natural pastes can taste sour. But this toothpaste recipe from the Things We’ll Make breaks down the helpful ingredients to use. Rather than silicone travel tubes to house the liquid, go with a reusable glass jar to remain eco-friendly.
