In Spain, 40% of the population is overweight and 22% suffer obesity. Twenty-two per cent of Spaniards claim that during the last year they have dieted, although only half of them have carried out with the supervision of a professional. Nutrition, Saxenda diet, POSE method, Elipse gastric balloon or TORE method are some of the treatments proposed by the Doctor Life Clinics to help reduce weight gradually and healthy.
The significant increase in obesity is one of the most difficult challenges in public health facing the current society. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 1980 and 2020, overweight and obesity have doubled in Spain. And it is not just a matter of aesthetics because this pathology is an important risk factor for multiple health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary diseases, certain types of cancer and other chronic diseases. Even though 2 out of 10 Spaniards claims to diet each year, Only half do it with the supervision of a professional.
In this regard, Dr. Rebeca García, a specialist in bariatric surgery and founder of the Clinics Doctor Life, he says: “we need to be careful with the methods of weight loss that take place. At the beginning of the year one of the purposes is to lose weight, but it is essential to do so with the advice and follow-up of a specialist. Each person has specific needs and does not perform the proper treatment can lead to a high degree of frustration, the dreaded effect bounces and, worse, cause an imbalance that causes other added pathologies.”
Lower kilos, reduce overweight and end obesity
According to a study prepared by NC Salud, after Christmas the Spanish increase the weight of 3 to 5 kilos. Retouching proper eating habits and physical exercise practice are usually enough to get back to the original weight.
Chronic overweight, which is established in a BMI between 25 and 30 and maintained for a year in a row, can be easily corrected with the guidelines that, after an analysis, medical specialists designate as suitable according to lifestyle, character and eating habits.
To properly evaluate the most appropriate technique and procedure, the team of nutrition and obesity experts at the Doctor Life Clinics performs various types of analysis:
- In-Body Analysis: This is a baseline study that provides information about body composition such as body water, fat-free mass, body mass index or fat percentage, among other variables.
- Nutrition: This study provides information on how foods affect genes. Once the results are obtained, the specialist will be able to develop a customized nutrition program that incorporates eating habits or routines based on the specific needs of the patient.
Diet Saxenda, a revolutionary technique to combat overweight
According to the latest European Health Survey in Spain published in 2020 by the INE, the overweight in adults affects almost 4 out of 10 Spanish of which, in almost 15 percentage points, males are more than 44.9 per cent compared to 30.6 per cent of the female population.
One of the options to correct overweight is the Saxenda diet. Indicated for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 27, this treatment supervised by the medical team of Doctor Life Clinics, is based on the control of the glucids and carries the start of a balanced and personalized nutritional plan, a re-education in food patterns, physical activity and the administration of a daily injection, whose dose is increased progressively. According to Dr. García “After 12 weeks of treatment, at least 5% of the body’s starting weight will be lost.”
The POSE Method, is also one of the most recommended treatments for those with moderate overweight. This is a reduction in the stomach through endoscopy and oral pathway that can reduce the stomach's capacity by 20%-25%. With this treatment it is possible to reach loss between 45% and 55% of excess weightBut it will be from the first day when the patient begins to lose weight gradually.
Eradicate obesity: a specific treatment for each patient
When BMI is over 30 it is when you can talk about obesity. There are almost three million people who die in the world every year because of the consequences of obesity on health such as hypertension, adult diabetes, certain types of cancer or some cardiovascular pathologies, among others.
This disease, considered by WHO (World Health Organization) as a chronic disease, already affects 22% of the Spanish adult populationa percentage that has tripled worldwide since the 1970s as reported by this organization.
The Andalusians, as indicated from the Ministry of Health, are the Spanish population with the highest obesity index (19.7%) while the melillens occupy the last position of all the Autonomous Communities with 6.8% obese among their population.
There are various treatments depending on the specific needs of each person. After the advice of a specialist, surgical intervention is not necessary to eradicate this disease.
This is the case of Elipse gastric balloon, a minimally invasive innovative technique of the Doctor Life Clinics that allows you to drop up to 15 kilos in 4 months safely and effectively. With this method, the Elipse ball is ingested by the patient in the form of a capsule and swells once in the stomach thanks to a catheter. This intervention does not require surgery, endoscopy or anesthesia and the doctor ensures that it is well placed through an X-ray. After staying in the stomach about 16 weeks, the ball is empty and digested naturally.
Another effective treatment for weight loss, and that does not require surgery is the 6 or 12 months gastric balloon, recommended for people with a BMI between 30 and 40i.e. patients with overweight or obesity type I and II, that want to lose between 20 and 35 kilos. During the duration of the treatment, the ball will take part in the stomach, so the patient will feel a greater sense of satiety with less food and therefore their intake level will be lower.
Weight recovery after bariatric surgery
There are patients who, after undergoing bariatric surgery such as gastric sleeves or gastric bypass, have seen how the lost kilos have been recovered until they have had a relapse BMI between 30 and 40. For this type of patients, Dr. Rebeca García recommends opting for Method TORE.
It's about a minimally invasive stomach reduction procedure, without scars and with a very fast recovery that consists of re-saturating the wall of the stomach, reducing capacity again through a series of folds in different strategic points.
It is important to note that all these treatments will not be effective at 100% if they are not done together with a nutritional plan and a food reeducation program. The obesity and overweight unit of the Doctor Life Clinics has, for this purpose, a team of specialists who accompany each patient in all steps of the thinning process to help them achieve well-being not only on the outside, but also on the inside.
