A fast moving life, career at stake and a craving for financial independence are one of the main reasons for a late marriage and a delayed pregnancy.

Ideally, the best time to have a baby is between 20 to 35. Pregnancy after the age of 35 is considered late and has numerous risks involved with it. However, with the advancement of medical sciences these pregnancies related risks can be identified and treated.

Here are a few risks and pregnancy complications involved with a 35 plus pregnancy:

Gestational Diabetes:

It’s a diabetes that effects women during pregnancy. It usually occurs when there is a predominant and strong history of diabetes running in the family. Other causes of gestational diabetes are an overweight expectant mother and sometimes glucose intolerance too.

 

It is usually diagnosed through urine or a blood test. Females suffering from Gestational Diabetes are prescribed insulin shots and are advised a fiber rich diet comprising of whole grains, complex carbs in the diet.

Hypertension:

Another common condition related with a delayed pregnancy is an increase in blood pressure, resulting in swollen feet, water retention and sometimes uterine contractions too.

A family history of hypertension or diabetes usually triggers off the condition which results in weight gain, facial swelling and numbness in fingers. The patient is advised bed rest and a low sodium diet. Chistes cortos

IUGR (Intra Uterine Growth Retardation):

It’s a tricky condition where baby’s growth moves towards retardation or the baby stops growing in the uterus. The mother is advised strict bed rest and might be administered on a high carbohydrate and high protein diet. Strong protein supplements and zinc supplements are also given for fetal maturity and weight gain.

 

Sudden Miscarriage:

A sudden abortion or miscarriage is one of the biggest risks with a 30 plus pregnancy. This loss of pregnancy usually happens before 20th week and is most of the times accompanied with sudden cramps or spotting or vaginal bleeding.

Hence, women who plan a late pregnancy are usually suggested HCG injections or other hormone therapies to keep the pregnancy sustained and to avoid risks of spontaneous abortion.

Other risks involved are chances of a pre term baby, uterine or cervical problems, hernia and kidney infections. However, with timely diagnosis these risks can be completely avoided and a safe and healthy pregnancy can be ensured!
