The initiative, which also takes place in Portugal with the luscious producers, is going to launch a school contest involving more than 5,000 children from 15 schools to “reinvent” HALLOWEEN with the national pumpkins
It's the halloween antonomasia queen. And taking advantage of their reign, the pumpkin producers of Spain and Portugal, together with the seed company Sakata, have joined in the Love Klabaza initiative to promote the consumption of this vegetables not only in autumn, but throughout the year. This week they launch the campaign ‘If you love me, give me pumpkins’, in which influencers, chefs like Martin Berasategui or Brothers Torres and nutritionists join this project to make known all the advantages of this vegetables, healthy, versatile in the kitchen and sustainable.
In addition, this initiative takes a step forward in the fight against food waste. Due to the skin characteristics of the peanut or butternut pumpkin, it can be painted and decorated without any deterioration and then used to consume it. This is what more than 5000 children from 15 schools in both Spain and Portugal will do during Thursday and Friday 28 and 29 October, students will receive in the classrooms pumpkins of this type to decorate and then cook in their homes.
The aim of Love Klabaza is to make known all the advantages of pumpkin, which is a gastronomic and nutritional jewel. Chips, bread, pumpkin hummus, how to peel a pumpkin with a simple peeler, beauty tricks, etc. Recipes of all kinds, tips, curiosities and the voice of experts highlighting their nutritional properties is what the consumer will find in www.loveklabaza.com and social networks. “We aspire to make it a product as common in our shopping basket as the potato, since it has very similar uses and, moreover, is healthier” says Javier Bernabéu, spokesman for Love Klabaza. “The consumption of pumpkin in Spain is reduced to creams, especially in infant age, and pastries, unlike other countries used in variety of dishes.” adds Bernabéu. In addition to its versatility in the kitchen, it stands out for being very healthy, since it has a high content in beta-carotenes, vitamin A, fiber and is also a very low vegetable in calories and fats.
Another of the properties of the pumpkin is that it is sustainable because it is a product of proximity, which has good conservation and can be consumed all year so it is interesting to decrease the environmental impact, by reducing the dependence of countries of the southern hemisphere for their export. Spain and Portugal are currently among the largest producers and pumpkin exporters in Europe.
