The General Council of Colleges of Physiotherapists of Spain (CGCFE), adheres to the celebration of World Diabetes Daysupporting the campaign of the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FEDE), with the slogan: ‘Diabetes: Protect Your Family’. This message highlights the important role of family members in managing, caring, prevention and education in all aspects and circumstances linked to this chronic disease.
Diabetes affects 425 million people worldwide and is one of the main causes of blindness, amputation, heart disease, kidney failure and premature death, so that every 8 seconds a death occurs due to this disease and every 30 seconds a lower limb is lost, according to the data of the International Federation of Diabetes (IDF). One in 3 people with diabetes will develop some kind of vision loss during their lifetime, as well as being more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases and kidney failure.
Diabetes is a chronic disease, which manifests when the pancreas cannot partially or totally produce a hormone called insulin., whose mission is to allow glucose and food to be swallowed to pass from the blood to the cell. The fact of this increase in blood glucose, as a result of the deficiency of this hormone, can cause significant consequences in a short period of time, such as body damage and organ and tissue failures.
There are three types of diabetes:
Type I diabetes or juvenile diabetes, in which there is an autoimmune reaction of the body attacking cells that produce insulin.
Type II diabetes, which represents 90% of cases, and is associated with overweight and obesity.
Diabetes gestational as a result of increased blood glucose during this stage.
Type II diabetes, which is the most common one, is primarily associated with overweight and obesity, so some healthy living habits and proper education is crucial to prevent and control the disease. For this reason, an appropriate programme therapeutic exercisePersonalized for each patient and always under the supervision of a Physiotherapist, it helps to combat risk factors, such as a poor or unbalanced diet, physical inactivity, and the consumption of tobacco and alcohol in excess. Therapeutic exercise improves cardiovascular performance and helps maintain proper glucemic control.
CGCFE supports FEDE messages, which in its World Diabetes Day manifest is committed to diabetological education, both for patients and for their families. In addition, it calls for increased resources for research, continued training of health professionals, as well as dissemination in the knowledge of this disease.
It is important to highlight, in the area of prevention, that it is essential and essential to establish an adequate and as early as possible diagnosis, which, together with a comprehensive treatment, is key to preventing and delaying complications that may appear throughout the life cycle of the individual suffering from this disease.
Healthy habits and education are key to preventing diabetes, according to CGCFE
