Mobility restrictions have altered training routines and athletes' diets. The physical and mental care of athletes is essential for them to return to competitions with normality. Herbalife Nutrition gives 5 tips for athletes to maintain their physical condition despite the measures of confinement and social distance
After more than two months of generalized confinement and indefinitely postponed championships, professional athletes are more than willing to resume their activity. However, mobility restrictions have made it difficult for many to maintain their usual regime of physical fitness and nutrition.
The global company specializing in nutrition and healthy lifestyle, Herbalife Nutrition, has shared with its sponsored athletes some tips to help them maintain their physical strength and mental health during the current situation until sports competitions are resumed:
- Maintain normal routine, prioritizing meals: Whether an elite athlete or more amateur, trying to keep habits is the best way to move on despite restrictions. This means getting up at the same time every morning, having breakfast as would normally be, doing the training and having enough time for recovery.
A key aspect of athlete training is feeding. Taking an appropriate nutritional plan is paramount to maintain muscle mass and energy.
- Consummate the necessary proteins and carbohydrates: Proteins are essential to build and maintain muscle mass, as well as providing basic components that help form antibodies.
Athletes usually consume dairy-based proteins due to their basic components: serum and caseine, which facilitate recovery after training. Dairy-based protein is also considered a “complete” protein, as it provides all essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own.
The amount of protein to ingest should be based on workloads, although the ideal thing for muscle construction and recovery is to consume between 20 g and 40 g of high quality protein after training.
In the case of athletes who opt for plant proteins, the mixture of these proteins should be the right one to replace the animal protein. It is also recommended to use soy, one of the few full vegetable proteins.
Consuming additional proteins can be positive for gaining weight. In this case, it would be advisable to take a protein shake before bed. If, on the contrary, you want to maintain weight and at the same time gain muscles, proteins and carbohydrates should be combined after training in a 1:1 ratio for optimal recovery.
People who exercise regularly—especially when it comes to strength or high-performance exercises—must be sure to consume enough carbohydrates, with whole products, fruits, vegetables, dairy and legumes, every day.
It is a good idea to ingest the main meal a couple of hours before exercising so that there is enough time for nutrient absorption. Pescados, mariscos, conservas y todo sobre el mar
- Intensify hydration: Sedentarism can cause a reduction in the usual consumption of liquids and at the same time increase the intake of unhealthy snacks. A good hydration not only helps to maintain the performance of athletes, but manages to calm the hunger feeling and helps to keep the body in full form.
For activities less than 60 minutes, water should be sufficient to provide the necessary hydration. By exercising intensively for more than 60 minutes and in heat conditions, an isotonic sports drink with 6%-8% carbohydrates is recommended.
- Outdoor training whenever possible: While there are still many restrictions on mobility, many provinces are lightening measures and allowing sport training in open spaces.
It is recommended to leave at noon to receive more vitamin D, due to the optimal position of the sun between 10h and 14h. Vitamin D affects inflammation, recovery and sports performance and plays an important role in the immune system, especially in cases of respiratory conditions.
Studies have also shown that adequate levels of vitamin D are important to improve mood.
- Keeping the emotional connection: The psychological and emotional aspect is fundamental in the work of any athlete. Athletes are usually surrounded by their teammates, which helps to keep them motivated, so the isolation and social distance measures have brought negative consequences.
It is important to maintain the connection with family and friends. Social networks can be a great tool to remember that everyone is going through similar situations.
Taking a break from the news or resorting to meditation to soothe nerves also contribute to better sleep and, therefore, to the rest necessary for recovery.
Whether it's a home or outdoor training, maintaining health and a good physical condition is achieved by combining exercise with good quality nutrition.
