A report by Herbalife Nutrition highlights that the Spanish population is increasingly sensitized with topics such as food and nutrition, but on the contrary, they suspend in exercise and physical activity
Although Spain has 17% of obese adults (Source: OECD) and this magnitude represents a health cost of €1,950 million for the National Health System (Source: Institut Hospital del Mar d’Investigacions Mèdiques), Spaniards are increasingly concerned about the quality of their food and the importance of a healthy life. This is the main conclusion that is drawn from the report made for Herbalife Nutrition on the healthy habits of the Spanish. The survey, made to 1,000 men and women between 18 and 55 years of different autonomous communities, also shows the growing awareness of the Spanish population with good quality of life through proper nutrition.
This interest is perfectly reflected in the fact that 80% of the respondents had breakfast daily, something that fell considerably a few years ago. This circumstance follows the upward trend in most countries and represents a positive development in the consideration of breakfast as the most important meal of the day.
On the other hand, the food habits of the respondents impose sustainability and the care of the environment, since more than 62% of the Spaniards have consumed some food of ecological origin. While they do not usually do so, it is a good starting point for the progressive incorporation of these products into their daily diet. In addition, more than 50% of consumers, where possible, choose foods that do not contain palm oil.
Nutrition is one of the fundamental pillars of health. 90% of respondents are aware that food influences digestive tract problems, so more than 40% consider it important to have a balanced diet based on fruits and vegetables. Equally a proper hydration is essential to help the body achieve greater performance. 63% of Spaniards drink between 1 and 2 liters of water a day. Despite these good results, almost 30% of the Spaniards punctuate their food below 5 and this in part is due to changes in the behavior patterns of the Spaniards such as lack of time to cook healthy and lack of planning in meals.
Although Spaniards practice more sport every day and are more aware of the importance of physical exercise, 56% perform less sport than the recommended, which means an improvement compared to 2017, in which 69% were below the Recommended Weekly Quantity (CSR). Frequent physical activity, reduces the risk of certain diseases (hypertension, heart disease or stroke), improves the health of the bones and the functional capacity of the body, while at the same time it is determinant for energy spending, which helps to maintain a caloric balance and a healthy weight.
But not only does it consist of playing sports, but in doing it well fed. 58% of people who perform regular physical activity do not take into account nutrition in sports practice, which means that 72% of the Spaniards do not eat any food or only eat a piece of fruit before doing sport, while 2 out of 10 confirm that they do not eat any food after exercising. Eating before performing any physical activity is vital for the body to function properly and can perform muscle work.
