Effects of the crisis: more aware of healthy food? The Herbalife Nutrition Healthy Habits Panel – which this year marks its fifteenth edition – emphasizes that Spaniards have adopted healthier habits in their way of feeding and reduced meals and dinners outside the house to between 1 and 2 times a week

After fifteen years following the pattern of how the nutrition habits of the Spaniards are, the annual Herbalife Nutrition Panel - developed in conjunction with the market research company Instituto IO Sondea- throws that the Spaniards improve in certain nutritional customs, such as daily breakfast, including fresh products in the shopping cart or light dinner.

The survey, which each year translates food customs and customs in Spain, is carried out by interviews with a sample of 2,025 people between the ages of 18 and 65, selected by quotas of sex, age and Autonomous Community according to INE.

By deepening in the study data, 9 out of 10 Spaniards claim to have breakfast daily, while 7 out of 10 believe that they feed healthy. On the other hand, 2 out of 3 people stand out that they make light dinners before going to bed (67%) and 44% already include in their shopping basket organic foods. This data could largely explain why Spain is the third country with the highest life expectancy in the world (83.1 years), surpassed only by Japan and Switzerland, according to the list provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

By ages, Herbalife Nutrition's report shows that it is precisely the elderly, 45 to 65 years of age, who are most opting for a healthy diet, characterized by daily breakfasts, healthy and natural food and the consumption of light dinners before going to bed. On the contrary, young people - from 18 to 44 years - are the most likely to eat less healthy foods or to sting between hours.

Women exceed men in the habit of having breakfast on a daily basis, and are more aware of the importance of making light dinners, even if they eat unhealthy food due to stress or usually chop between hours.

Gastronomic leisure and influences on individual purchase
Spaniards like the social habit of eating and eating out of the house, but their cost is a determining factor at the time of doing so. If eight years ago 75% stated in this same study that they made less out of bars due to the crisis and the decrease of purchasing power, the custom has been consolidated and more than half of the people of our country claim to eat out of house between one and two days a week, and 2 out of 3 dine between one and two days out of house per week. 15,90% never eats outside the house and 23,31% never eat outside the house.

Asked for food spending, each Spanish spends an average of 225€ per month in its individual shopping basket, while in gastronomic leisure it only spends an average of 122€, which shows a greater preference for home cooking in front of the restoration, despite the advertising bombing coming from the media and social networks.

More than 70% of respondents consider, in fact, that television, mobiles and the media in general, influence a lot (21.88%) or quite (49.28%), in the good or bad food of children and adults, either with home-prepared food or consumed in restaurants. Only 5% think they have no relation to eating habits.
