Beware Everything You Read About Natural Sanitizer: How to Use Tea Tree Oil Safely
As a Rocky Mountain Oils (RMO) affiliate, I only use this company’s organic tea tree essential oil because it WORKS! RMO oils are 100% pure, therapeutic, and premium quality.
First, let’s talk about who can use the sanitizer and a few other safety concerns.
I decided to write this post because I noticed many people online offering super unsafe alternatives for handwashing lately, like rubbing tea tree oil directly into your skin as a natural disinfectant.
Yes, tea tree essential oil is awesome for cleaning. It does disinfect well.
But you should always dilute tea tree oil with a carrier before topical application. Never, ever ingest it. Tea tree is toxic when ingested.
If you choose not to dilute the oil before use, you could face serious health concerns. Few people see negative reactions with topical use, and fewer with aromatherapy. That said, applying tea tree could cause skin irritation, swelling, stinging, redness, itching, burning, and even further dryness. If you have eczema or serious allergies, don’t use tea tree oil.
Tea tree essential oil also isn’t safe for all ages. Young children, the elderly, and those with serious health conditions may want to dilute the oil much more than regular recommendations or avoid the oil altogether. Rocky Mountain Oils has a guide for safely using oils by age and dilution guidelines. Avoid use with babies under 6-months altogether. Pregnant women may not want to use tea tree.
Some other posts I’ve seen online also claim you can make a safe disinfectant spray with the oil and water. However, oil and water don’t mix. This means the essential oil sits on the water and doesn’t mix together. When you spray the solution, you can still wind up with bits of pure oil on your skin (which again, isn’t 100% safe).
My recipe combines tea tree essential oil with a pre-made lotion for this reason. Unscented lotion acts as a safe carrier, combining with the oil to create a natural sanitizing lotion. You could use other carriers as well, such as fractionated coconut oil (which is also amazing for people who are prone to dry skin issues).
For more information on using essential oils safely, please check out the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). They have a safety dilution guide for all ages (and all oils) as well.
The Only Two Ingredients You Need for My Natural Sani-Lotion
My homemade and natural sani-lotion recipe only requires two things: tea tree essential oil and unscented lotion.
You only need two ingredients for my recipe: tea tree essential oil and unscented lotion.
If you choose to use a pre-packaged lotion for your natural-sanitizer lotion, the process is much easier. You can combine the ingredients directly in the lotion bottle, so you don’t even need to purchase a container to hold your mixture.
I used a few travel-size bottles of lotion I already had at home, squirting a little lotion out into a larger bottle to make room for the essential oil.
So which oil and lotion should you use?
You may already know that Rocky Mountain Oils (RMO) is my go-to company for pure essential oils. As an RMO affiliate, I do rep the essential oils from this brand. You can purchase your tea tree essential oil online using my affiliate link for a deal.
As for the lotion, I chose to use my absolute favorite Melaleuca lotion called Renew. Renew is an intensive skin therapy lotion from the all-natural company Melaleuca. It’s clinically proven to help your severely dry skin feel silky and healthy in only 24 hours.
Although it’s an MLM company (meaning you need to find a representative to purchase the products rather than buy them in stores), Melaleuca is a wellness company with awesome personal hygiene and cleaning products.
I’ve been using Renew for over 15 years with amazing results, and I’ve never recommended any other product more. Melaleuca’s Renew lotion clears and keeps away psoriasis from my elbow, and it never feels too heavy or sticky on my skin like many other store-bought lotions.
If you want to use the same lotion I did, fill out the contact form at the bottom of this post. My friend Kelsey is a Melaleuca rep who’ll take awesome care of you.
Just so you know, I don’t earn anything from recommending Melaleuca products. I’m not a rep. I don’t personally stand behind some of the practices MLM companies follow. I simply love this lotion.
You could use any lotion you prefer. Lotion in itself is an easy, go-to carrier for essential oils. RMO has an excellent nontoxic body butter and skincare line too. Choose your favorite option.

To make your own homemade sanitizer lotion, collect the ingredients.
Directions: Combine the two ingredients directly in the lotion bottle, shaking well to fully combine the oil and lotion.
The only difference in how you’ll use this recipe depends on the amount of lotion you have.
For a small, travel-size lotion bottle, add 5-6 drops of tea tree essential oil. (I used the travel-size Renew lotion, which is 1 fluid ounce or 30mL). This results in around a 1% dilution rate, safe for adults over 65 and kids between 2 and 6 years old.
If you want a stronger blend, 4% dilution is common among hand sanitizers. You’d use around 15 to 18 drops of tea tree essential oil in the same travel-size lotion bottle for this result.
A larger lotion bottle requires more essential oil. Make sure to convert the measurement based on the size of your essential oil bottle as well. Check out RMO’s dilution guidelines if you need help.
Again, Safety is Your Main Concern

Kids and pets should never ingest essential oils, especially tea tree oil. Those under the age of 15 or over the age of 65 may not do well with strong dilutions as well. Never add undiluted oils to your skin or even diffuse certain oils in the air (aromatherapy) unless you know they’re safe for your family and pets.
I want to stress that how you mix this recipe depends on who will use the sani-lotion later.
Do You Enjoy Tea Tree Oil? Other Safe Alternatives
RMO’s purify essential oil blend contains multiple natural cleaners. The smell is much better if tea tree oil’s scent bothers you. Use it as an alternative or in addition to tea tree as you wish.
If you’re looking for an alternative to tea tree oil, RMO’s purify essential oil blend is another awesome choice.
Purify is a blend of natural cleansers that leaves out the unpleasant smell many people don’t like about tea tree oil. It keeps germs away and is totally safe for all ages. All you need is 1 to 3 drops per 1/2 teaspoon of a carrier (oil or lotion works well).
Which Oil is Your Favorite?
Try using RMO’s tea tree essential oil or the purify blend for the best results.
