Consuming sustainable products, reducing the intake of animal products, avoiding waste of food, supporting sustainable agriculture and consuming proximity products are the keys to caring for the health of people and that of the planet. Luigi Gratton, nutritionist and vice president of the Herbalife Nutrition training area, details the key points of this diet and lifestyle
Agriculture, livestock and fisheries are large consumers of resources such as water and a large source of greenhouse gas emissions. All this has a negative impact on ecosystems, the planet and living beings. According to Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona “The food system is responsible for 21-37% of all greenhouse gas emissions of the world, uses about 70% of fresh water and is an important source of water pollution”. But not only that, also this system is linked to the deforestation and, moreover, it currently occupies around 40% of the living land worldwide.
For the multinational specializing in nutrition and healthy lifestyle, Herbalife Nutrition, these figures highlight the need for a change in the system for its unsustainability. But where does that paradigm shift go? The doctor, clinical nutritionist and Vice-President of the Herbalife Nutrition Training Area, Luigi Gratton, points - as the WHO, the IPCC, FAO or the CSIC, among other institutions - to sustainable food as a solution to this problem, deflating the key points to care for health and that of the planet.
Consuming products that have less impact on the planet
Consuming healthy and nutritious products that have a low impact on the planet encompasses what the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) calls as “sustainable healthy diet”. This type of diet, which puts in the center sustainability and healthtakes into account factors such as international nutrition recommendations, the environmental cost of food production and consumption, and adaptability to local social, cultural and economic contexts.
Ultimately, following a sustainable healthy diet is to increase food intake plant origin (here are not only vegetables and fruits, but also vegetables, nuts and cereals); consume unsaturated fatslimit salt consumption; avoid intake of processed meats and animal foods (here are also dairy products and eggs), etc.
Gratton bets on soy as an alternative protein consumption of animal origin. This product - it can be found in the form of textured soy, tofu, vegetable drinks, shoots, etc. - is a perfect substitute for meat, needs less water and, less land for its production and, in addition, leaves a lower carbon footprint in the environment.
Other substitutes of the animal protein are also altramuces, chickpeas, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, peanuts, beans, sesame and linen, wheat germ, lentils, seitan, beans, almonds, peas, anacardos, pistachios, walnuts, pine nuts, pine nuts, pine nuts, pineapples “Reduce meat in our diets and still having a healthy diet is easier than you can think”, says Gratton.
Consuming proximity products
Consumption of proximity products or kilometer zero avoids greater impact on the environment. The elaboration of a product involves the production, storage, packaging, transport, etc. of this. The shorter the entire chain, the less the impact the product has on the planet. In addition, consume proximity foods also benefits the local economy and the pocket - because they are usually cheaper-. Also, consuming zero kilometer products also means that the ingredients are fresher and tastysince they do not need to freeze or undergo conservation treatments. Estados para Whatsapp
More sustainable agricultural model
Sustainable agriculture seeks to strengthen and improve traditional agriculture. To do this, it uses methods that maintain soil fertility and quality, tries to save energy and recycle natural resources and has as one of its main objectives not to contaminate water. This type of agriculture takes into account the ecosystem, the conservation of species and natural spaces and, for all this, try to stop land degradation. Sustainable agriculture is not necessarily ecological, but yes seeks to be efficient clients and institutions should try to favor this type of agricultural model when they make the purchase.
Avoid wasting food
According Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food each year every Spanish wastes around 31 kilos of food. Throwing food implies that the entire chain of production and consumption of resources has not served at all. From water to energy or land and CO2, everything is lost by not taking advantage of and consuming that food.
To avoid this waste is advisable planning the meals and the purchase before buying; do not fill the dish with more food than it will be consumed; and do not throw food simply because they have imperfectionsespecially in the case of fruits and vegetables, since this does not indicate that they are in poor condition.
Individuals and companies, two actors essential to a more sustainable world
Adopting a sustainable mentality and instilling changes in the habits of society to protect the environment is not achieved overnight. However, at the individual level, they can be purchased small gestures and sustainable routines like using cloth bags instead of plastic, recycling and reusing instead of buying and consuming more vegetable products; all of them with a great impact on the environment. At the global level, the demands go further, as a commitment by agencies and companies is required to make the benefits greater.
Herbalife Nutrition makes a continuous effort to positively reduce its environmental impact, improve health and meet the dietary and cultural preferences of consumers. As a sample of this, a document on the impulse of sustainable diets in Europein which they called for action for European and national political leaders promote healthier and more active lifestyles, develop more sustainable food systems and allow greater investment in research and development to boost the market of plant proteins in the European Union. In addition, they support the strategy “From seed to table” of the EU and are members of the Advisory Council Smart Protein and Project INCREASE, two projects funded by the EU through which they share their knowledge and perspectives based on research on plant proteins and human health. The objective of this line of action of the company is not another to promote dialogue, sensitize and encourage discussions on the importance of sustainable diets to protect health and that of the planet.
