To install the carpet you will have to first decide about the carpet color, texture and the cost. The cost in turn depends upon the carpet texture and the room measurement. Assuming that such decisions have been made, let us start the installation process:
Difficulty Level
Highly challenging. The work also requires a lot of hard work and may result in moderate to severe knee and back pain.
Instructions
First step – Move out all furniture & long hanging curtains from the room. Remove the entrance door.
Carpet installation tools – To install the carpet you would need the following – Tackless strips, stapler, knife, hammer, tape, seam roller (or a rolling pin), seam cutter & tape, seaming iron, strip cutter, wall trimmer, stretcher, gloves, chalk, and knee pads. You can rent these tools.
Old carpet – Get rid of the old tackless strips carefully. To remove the old carpet cut it into strips of 20 (or so) inches wide. Remove the moldings and from the wall side roll the carpet strips. Remove the carpet pad (only if you want to). Clean the floor and repair any board damage (to the floor) if any.
New carpet installation – Begin by inserting the new tackless strips (the sharp tacks should face the wall) around the room with a gap of half an inch from the wall. Leave the door area for now. The tackless strips should be held tightly at the corners of the room.
New Carpet pad – The pad strips should be put side by side without any overlapping. Use a duct to seal the seams. The edges should be stapled against the tackless strip. It doesn’t matter if they measure more as it can be later cut using a utility knife.
Installing the carpet – Measure the longest section of the room and now cut the first section using this measurement plus 6 inches more (for all sections). For cutting, mark on both edges of the new carpet (always do so at the back) and using a chalk join these two marks. Now fold the carpet and cut using a utility knife along the back side of the carpet. Put the carpet section on the floor.
Smooth seams - If you need more than one piece of carpet, then make sure the sections overlap by 6 inches atleast on all sides. At the place where they join and overlap, use a knife to cut through both sections. Now use a seaming tape beneath the carpet sections (adhesive should face up) and then follow it with a seaming iron. Use a seam roll or a rolling pin to seal the seam.
Now using a knee kicker tool and your knees stretch the carpet over the tackless strips so that it is held firmly there. Finally use a carpet stretcher tool to firmly hold the carpet above the tackless strips.
Trim the excess carpet using the knife or trimmer.Trim the lower part of your door and use a door edge strip for the carpet section near the door. Re-join your door and make sure it moves smoothly over the carpet.
