How To Cook A Turkey

There is no thanksgiving without a delicious and juicy turkey placed beautifully on your dining table. To properly roast a turkey you have to pay attention to the temperature of your oven carefully.

Before starting the recipe you would ofcourse need a good organic turkey. You will have to first thaw and then clean the turkey properly. To thaw a frozen turkey you can place it inside the refrigerator for two, three or more days depending on the size of the bird. Follow our simple steps to roast your turkey to perfection.

Difficulty Level

Simple but pay attention to the temperature given below.

Instructions

  • Ingredients- One turkey (15 to 20 lbs), lemon juice, salt, pepper, melted butter or oil, sprigs of fresh or dried rosemary, one onion, two carrots and parsley. The best method to follow is to cook the turkey and stuffing separately.
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Start the process by carefully removing the giblets and the neck. If the turkey legs are already tied do not remove it. Otherwise tie the legs together using kitchen strings.
  • Clean the turkey and dry it using paper towels.
  • Apply lemon juice inside the cavity and later rub salt over it.
  • Put onion pieces, parsley, carrots and celery inside the turkey (optional), place aluminum foil to prevent it from falling and finally tie the whole bird properly.
  • Apply melted butter or oil all over the outside part of the turkey and then sprinkle salt and pepper over it.
  • Put the turkey in a breast down position over a big roasting pan and spread rosemary on the outside portion of the turkey.
  • Put the turkey inside the oven. Let it cook for 20 minutes at 450 degree F. Then reduce the temperature to 250 degree F for the remaining time. The skin should turn golden brown and the roasting time for unstuffed turkey is usually between three to four hours.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature. Insert the thermometer deep inside the turkey breast without touching any bones. This should be done 30 minutes before the finishing time. It should read 175 degree F for the thighs and 165 degree F for the breast.
  • Once done, remove the turkey and let it rest for 20 minutes before carving it with the knife.
