How To Cook Basmati Rice

Most of us cannot do without rice in our diet. It is an important source of energy and is necessary for proper bodily functions. Medical experts suggest eating white rice in smaller quantities since it has a high glycemic index. If you feel robbed of rice in your diet due to high blood sugar, you can always turn to basmati rice.

Sold in plenty in India and available in most countries, basmati rice is an aromatic and delicate flavored rice that is savored the world over. This long grain rice comes in two types – white and brown. Typically, the brown variety is healthier as it retains the bran, which is an important source of fiber. It also contains a good amount of thiamine (vitamin B1) and niacin (vitamin B3).

One of the nice things about this particular type of rice is that when cooked, it does not stick together in a gloppy mess. Cooking rice is extremely easy. You can be a complete novice in the kitchen but you certainly cannot go wrong with these simple steps to cook basmati rice.

Instructions

  • You will need the following ingredients – 2 cups of good quality basmati rice (white basmati preferably), 4 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of oil and salt to taste.
  • Use a thick bottomed pot with a lid that fits well to cook your basmati rice. Spread the rice on a large plate and pick out any stones you see.
  • Tip the rice into a large bowl and add water to wash the rice. Run your fingers through the rice to dislodge any dirt. Pour out the dirty water. Repeat the washing instructions 3-4 times till the water is clear.
  • Drain the water out completely and spread the washed rice on a plate. Boil the water in a saucepan. Cover it with a lid once boiled. Heat the oil in the wok. Add the washed rice and stir for 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle with the required amount of salt. Pour the hot water into the cooking pot and stir well.
  • Turn up the flame to high and cover the pot with a lid. After 5 minutes, turn it down and allow the rice to cook on a low flame. Basmati rice cooks fairly quickly so do not leave it on the stove for too long. Stir once or twice to ensure the rice does not stick to the bottom of the pot.
  • Your basmati rice should be ready within 15-20 minutes. Take a few grains of rice in a spoon and test to see if they are cooked. Take it off the stove and serve piping hot with an accompaniment of your choice.

  • Fragrant basmati rice goes very well with vegetable and meat curries or gravies along with a crunchy green salad.
  • Do not change the ratio of rice to water. They should always be in proportion to each other. Do not add any extra water either. If you do, the basmati rice dish will turn out overcooked and unappetizing.
