How To Make A Martini

Martini; supposedly derived from the drink Martinez, named after the town of Martinez located in San Francisco; was first prepared in 1862. The 20th century saw the rise in popularity of this gin-based drink but its popularity pummeled in the 1970s and 80s owing to the advent of other; more ‘hip’ drinks. However, the Martini gained back its status as an elegant cocktail drink in the mid 1990s.

The Martini is quoted to have as many versions and variations as the number of Martini drinkers; and bartenders keep trying new experiments with this popular drink. James Bond movies gave rise to Martini drinkers, who liked to order their drinks, ‘shaken and not stirred’ in the style of the 007 spy.

There are ardent supporters of both the shaken and stirred variety who staunchly support their versions, however no matter whether the drink is stirred or shaken, both are equally favored. The difference between the shaken and the stirred variety is that when the drink is stirred it retains the clarity of the drink while the shaken version contains tiny ice flecks; which enhances both taste and appearance for some.

Instructions

  • To prepare Martini, you will need, 2 ½ oz of gin, a minuscule amount of dry vermouth (ratio of 8:1 of gin against vermouth). You will also need ice and an olive for garnishing.
  • The stirred version is prepared by putting ice cubes in a cocktail shaker and vermouth is poured and stirred gently. This is then strained quickly and the gin is added and stirred. The mixture is then poured into a martini glass and is ready for consumption.
  • The shaken variety is prepared by mixing all the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker and shaken well before being poured into the martini glass.
  • A dry martini simply means that the vermouth quantity is negligent or totally absent.
  • A Gibson contains vodka as the alcohol base instead of gin and the garnish is a pickled onion instead of olive.
  • Tips and Warnings

  • The original martini was prepared using gin, but the new variations often use vodka instead of gin, and forgo the vermouth altogether. Green apple, apple, cherry and chocolate are some of the popular martini flavor used as variations.
