Martini; supposedly derived from the drink Martinez, named after the town of Martinez located in San Francisco; was first prepared in 1862. The 20th century saw the rise in popularity of this gin-based drink but its popularity pummeled in the 1970s and 80s owing to the advent of other; more ‘hip’ drinks. However, the Martini gained back its status as an elegant cocktail drink in the mid 1990s.
The Martini is quoted to have as many versions and variations as the number of Martini drinkers; and bartenders keep trying new experiments with this popular drink. James Bond movies gave rise to Martini drinkers, who liked to order their drinks, ‘shaken and not stirred’ in the style of the 007 spy.
There are ardent supporters of both the shaken and stirred variety who staunchly support their versions, however no matter whether the drink is stirred or shaken, both are equally favored. The difference between the shaken and the stirred variety is that when the drink is stirred it retains the clarity of the drink while the shaken version contains tiny ice flecks; which enhances both taste and appearance for some.
