How to Say No Politely

Do you find yourself struggling in situations in which you agreed to do something for a friend or family when you didn’t want to do it? Is it too hard for you to decline a favor to someone despite your busy schedule? Here are few tips that will help you to learn to say ‘NO’ in such situations without offending others and avoid experiencing the resentment you usually feel. At the same time you will realize that a simple no can spare ample time for yourself and your priorities.

Difficulty Level

It is a moderately challenging task to learn to say no and take a stand. But once you get into the habit, you will find it easy to assert your view point and follow it.

Instructions

  • To begin with, practice saying no over and over again. Stand in front of a mirror and practice saying no. Don’t give out lengthy explanations and just focus on saying no. When someone from family or work asks you a favor and you don’t have time or just don’t want to do it, politely refuse by saying “I have a previous commitment” or “I am not the best person to do this” or any such excuse. Don’t go into details and give explanations. This will give rise to suspicion.
  • If you cannot make up your mind about the task, put off by saying that you will check your calendar and see if you have time for it. Go home and think about it. Politely refuse the favor if your final answer is no. Don’t give the other person a chance to press you on this issue. However if the other person still persists stay determined on your stance.
  • Stop feeling guilty about declining a favor. You as an individual have your own priorities and commitments which cannot be avoided. Accept the fact that it is okay to say no. You cannot always compromise on your schedule to please others. If the person is a genuine friend, he/she will understand your stance.
  • Some people intentionally try to pass on their tasks to others to avoid working and try to take advantage of people who cannot refuse anyone. Beware of such people. Learning to say no to such people will prevent them from taking advantage of you.
  • By saying no to such people, you can keep the free time to practice things you like and give time to your family.
