A few weeks ago the United Nations Decade of Family Agriculture was launched worldwide. It aims to create an enabling environment that maximizes contributions to food security, global nutrition and a healthy and sustainable future

The launch was conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and led by the World Rural Forum (WFP).

The Decade of Family Agriculture has been a step forward, thanks to the commitment of many organizations, associations and Governments. That's it. result of a process that began more than 10 years ago, when the World Rural Forum launched the campaign for the declaration of the international year of family farming in 2008.

For this entity the declaration of the decade is not, in itself, the change that is sought, but rather, the opportunity to achieve that change. “It is the beginning of a road that must lead us, irrenunciaably, to improve the lives of the farmers and family farmers of the 5 continents” says Martin Uriarte, president of the World Rural Forum and manager of Lorra S.Coop.

This path has been strengthened by the holding of the VI Global Conference for Family Farming held in Bilbao, attended by more than 260 participants from 66 countries. This forum made an important contribution to the construction of the decade's plan of action and dozens of new organizations met and engaged in the process. “The main keys to successfully addressing the decade were discussed: empowerment and recognition of women and youth, training and training. There was also talk of agroecology, economic and environmental sustainability, of food security and sovereignty, of climate change to fuel the local economies of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 agenda and of how family farming collaborates in their achievement” explains Martin Uriarte. Among all these keys the World Rural Forum highlights 4 special aspects for the decade to achieve and achieve its objectives.

*The establishment of National Plans of the decade for family agriculture, which includes specific commitments in terms of public policies, policy frameworks, budget allocation, etc. These plans should be defined in each country by Governments, national family farming committees, agrarian organizations and other actors such as civil society organizations, etc.

*Recognition and strengthening of National committees of family farming and other spaces of political dialogue for the development, monitoring and implementation of the national plans of the decade.

* Strengthening of the organizations of farmersto be a fundamental part of the process of building public policies and also to improve the services they offer to their members. This will strengthen its importance and the need to support its participation in all political construction processes.

♪ The launch of policy monitoring system in the framework of the decade, reporting on the progress achieved in each pillar and at each level. A system involving civil society.

Joint work on these master lines will make the decade a real tool to improve the quality of life of farmers and family farmers on all 5 continents.
