Aquaculture of Spain presents “How to make a responsible purchase that contributes to sustainable development?”, the second episode of podcast The pantry of the future, a new format that proposes a space for discussion and dissemination around sustainable and healthy eating habits. This space brings together expert voices in nutrition, environment and sustainability, to convey advice on conscious and just consumption when making the purchase

For the second episode, Aquaculture of Spain has counted again with the voices of Carlos Ríos, nutrition expert and creator of the RealFooding movement, and Mercedes Martín, presenter of Antena 3 News and licensed in Oceanography and Environment. Among the main topics addressed by the intervening, two stand out, inspired by questions that could be made by any consumer: “What tools do I have to make a responsible purchase?” and “What kind of food should I purchase and where?”. In addition, they propose different Healthy tips within the framework of circular economy and Fair trade.
Eradicate obsolete and globalizing forms of consumption in which the processes are not treated, but the final consumption, is another of the milestones that arise in this new episode. The incorporation of concepts as equity, justice, savings, products of closeness, at the time of making the purchase, as well as the implementation of “small, but relevant advice” for the day to day, can be fundamental in order to achieve what specialists call the food of the future in 2050. In this sense, a convenient reading of food labelling will be decisive. It also proposes the return to “old uses” such as the bulk purchase or cooking, which consists of reusing the surplus of food in new and nutritious recipes. The podcast also offers small tips on sustainable ways to cook to save on the light bill.
In relation to the nutritional pyramid recommended by the World Health Organization, the podcast of Carlos Rios and Mercedes Martín invites the purchase and consumption of vegetables, but also of fish and algae, as can be those of Aquaculture in Spain, being conceived as the great healthy alternative throughout the new chapter. FAO ensures that 50 per cent of the fish consumed comes from aquaculture and estimates that by 2030 it will be already two thirds.
It is therefore a food option that ensures the traceability of the product and respect for the ecosystem, which allows access to fish on a regular basis and throughout the year. Thanks to the exchange of reflections and advice from both experts, he manages to outline how the ideal shopping basket should be if it is attached to responsibility and sustainability as fundamental criteria.
