The foodtech, a pioneer in Spain in the sustainable ‘meal kits’ model, offers a new concept of healthy homemade food, adapted to the current society, with recipes based on fresh seasonal products. Its ‘zero waste’ strategy prevents waste of food, by buying and cooking just amounts of ingredients, and eliminates the use of disposable plastics

Healthy eating is trendy, and today cooking has become trend, but taking a healthy diet every day requires thinking the menu, going to buy the ingredients and then making the dishes. The result is that saving time tends to buy everything in the nearest supermarket and we end up eating more or less the same. In this context it is born foodStories, a Spanish startup that proposes the user different menus and takes home the pack of ingredients, in the fair amounts to prepare each recipe and avoid waste of food, and in recyclable and totally sustainable glass containers.

“We offer an innovative healthy food alternative that is committed to a new way of cooking, adapted to the rhythm of the current society, which allows us not to give up homemade food and fresh products and at the same time to be environmentally friendly. The consumer finds in our e-commerce simple and attractive healthy recipe ideas, chooses the number of rations you want and we save you to go to buy the ingredients, always giving you top quality products and in reusable packagings”, explains Emilio Viguera, general director of foodStories.

In this way, the foodtech brings to Spain this business model, very widespread in the United States, based on the concept of ‘meal kits’, and evolves it to become the first healthy and sustainable food e-commerce with a positive impact on society.

The recipes are made by nutritionists from fresh seasonal products purchased from local suppliers, close to the farmer. In this way, intermediaries are avoided, which encourages food to retain its maximum properties; the carbon footprint associated with food transport is avoided; and when purchasing local producers, proximity trade and local consumption are supported, favouring local economies.

In addition, foodStories maintains a ‘zero waste’ strategy: on the one hand, it avoids waste of food, by using the exact doses for the preparation of each recipe, which favors responsible consumption; and on the other, it totally renounces all types of single-use plastics, thus helping to reduce the generation of environmentally damaging waste. Currently, it is the only company in the world that serves home food in recyclable glass containers, which the user returns to be sterilized and reused in future orders. Todo sobre toldos

“Our packaging policy is ‘100% plastic free’. Most of our ingredients go in glass containers, and the rest are recycled kraft paper bags, recycled cardboard leaks and recycled cardboard boxes. When the user makes an order, he or she must pay an additional deposit fee for the containers, which he or she recovers by returning them to the dealer in later deliveries”, explains Viguera.

The company, created in August 2019, began to operate in the testing phase last March in Madrid capital, and already has more than 250 customers and has served more than 2,300 rations, which has meant the recirculation of more than 2,000 glass containers. Its objective is to reach the 28,000 recycled containers at the end of the year, which would mean avoiding the environment about 100 kilos of single-use plastic.

Philosophy ‘Lean manufacturing’ and own technology
foodStories is defined as a minimalist company, for its firm conviction to use only the resources strictly necessary. Therefore, all its processes are based on the concept ‘Lean manufacturing’, a management model that seeks to optimize the production system, using the minimum amount of resources and avoiding the stock of products.

In addition, the technology developed by the company allows to calculate the costs of each product ration, generate automatic purchase lists every night with the products needed for the rations of the next day, issue automatic orders to the suppliers and carry out all the recycling of containers.

“We do not accumulate products in cold chambers, we want to offer food to our customers directly from their place of production. Therefore, every morning we take the list of the purchase and acquire in Mercamadrid the fresh products that will be included in the ‘meal kits’ of that day, we transport them to our ship and, after quality control, we prepare them and package them for their shipment,” explains the general director of foodStories. With regard to home delivery, the company is committed to clean electric vehicles.

At the moment foodStories only provides its service in the city of Madrid (inland area of the M-30, saving some exception), but its forecast is to expand the service to new cities over the next two years, beginning with Barcelona and Paris, and in the longer term continue with other large cities in Europe, such as Lisbon or Milan.
