Miomas are benign tumors whose consequences can be, among others, infertility
Every day more women discover, in their routine visit to the gynecologist, who have miomas. Antonia González, Embryologa and CEO and Founder of Natural Psychofertility, is dedicated to helping women regulate their hormonal system: “I could say that 80% of the women I see in my consultation have myomas. It's a very high number. And professionals should ask us why.” “As almost all endocrine pathologies – he explains – modern are on the rise and this is no coincidence.”
A mioma is a tumor, usually benign, that develops in the uterus – sustains the embryologist -, “and that are usually increased in size with time, and this progressive increase will be faster or slower, depending on the life habits of the woman, because there are already publications and studies that relate the growth of tissues (myomas, endometriosis etc.) with hormonal disorders and even habits.”
“In another interview I spoke a lot of the endocrine disruptors, as one of the cause of so many hormonal deregles, so I don’t want to be repeated and I will only remember a couple of interesting articles on this issue: this and this“.
Should a woman worry about having a mime?
“It depends on many factors, where the mime is located, the size of it, whether you are looking to become pregnant or not, the discomfort that generates you in your daily life etc. Each woman is a world and that’s why treatments should always be personalized,” says the expert.
The embryologist recalls that there are different types of myomas, according to the place in which they are found, the most common are:
Submucosal miomas: This type of myoma is found in the inner part of the uterus, that is, they can affect the layer where the embryo is implanted, which is called endometrial, this is the layer that is expelled with each menstruation. These miomas, being closer to the inside of the uterus, are what give more symptoms and are more annoying to the woman, as it can cause more abundant menstruation bleeding -. They may also cause pain during the rule and may also cause fertility problems. It will depend much on the size that has the most or less symptomatology. Obviously the greater the muscle mass, the more discomfort, pain and pressure it produces.
Intra-mural miomas: these develop in the muscular wall of the uterus, that is, they are more external than submucosos. They are usually also common, and usually do not cause discomfort in women, but in some cases it has been seen that more abundant bleeding occurs in menstruation.
Subserious myomas: These myomas are the most external, they grow in the outer layer of the uterus and depending on their size may cause pain because they cause pressure with organs or tissues surrounding the uterus.
The way to know if you have a myoma is through an ultrasound, better if it is intravaginal, there is no blood test that can detect it. In the case of a resonance in the uterus, of course they will detect them, but it is understood that a vaginal ultrasound has been previously performed.
And in exceptional cases you can detect by performing a hysteroscopy or laparoscopy, but these are more aggressive tests than having the possibility of obtaining information through an ultrasound, it would make no sense.
What symptoms cause
Menstruation pain, pain in having sex, more abundant bleeding in the rule, also bleeding between rules, pressure in the abdominal area, fertility problems, spontaneous abortions and complications in pregnancy.
The treatments that arise today are very varied: it will depend on the type of myoma and the size. When there are several myomas or their size is very large, professionals usually recommend surgery, either by removing the myoma, or surgery by removing the uterus directly, in the most extreme cases. “It is also proposed to take hormones to relieve symptoms and try to reduce the benign tumor. Although recently some clinics are practising a new way of reducing myoma, by radiofrequency, it does not require surgery or taking hormones, so it could be a positive and less aggressive alternative for women,” the expert recalls.
“In my center we collaborate with professionals who perform this technique and we are getting good results on it, but always accompanied by a comprehensive hormonal treatment, that is to say, to change the eating habits, not only is it about eating healthy, but to know what foods are more or less recommended in each woman, a clinical analysis study is previously done so that we can design a customized program for each woman.”
“In addition to feeding, avoiding endocrine disruptors, a personalized study, we must take into account physical exercise, because it is a very powerful natural hormone regulator. And it is essential for women to have a perfect functioning of their liver, the detox phase is essential to remove the remaining estrogens, as well as not having hyperestrogenism, and if they treat it with supplementation and feeding, and to detect if there is a low-grade chronic inflammation, which we can also improve through dietary and life-long supplements and habits. Body fat is also important for miomas, especially visceral, because it is the most related to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. And we must not forget that fat is a toxic reservoir, and the more toxic we accumulate, the more work we give to the liver and return to the wheel of estrogens, inflammation,” González concludes.
