Reduced food wastage is possible thanks to small gestures. One of them is an innovative project that aims to keep fruits and vegetables in optimal conditions for longer keeping their nutrients, aroma and taste intact. “It’s a few envelopes that contain natural clays that neutralize ethylene gas, a natural hormone that detracts fruits and vegetables by keeping up to twice as long and thus helping to reduce waste by promoting more responsible consumption,” says Marta Pastor, founder of Naturpod. Ethylene is the main cause of the ripening of these foods and using these envelopes properly saves time and money while contributing to the sustainability of the planet.

The figures are demolishing: 3 out of 4 Spanish households waste food, which is about 31.3 kilos per inhabitant per year according to calculations from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Each year 1⁄3 of the food produced, equivalent to 1.3 billion tons are thrown into the trash between the final consumer and retail trade. In addition, the food sector is responsible for 30 per cent of global energy consumption and 22 per cent of greenhouse gases, and therefore the call for responsible consumption is made more than necessary.

“The Objective of Naturpod is to keep the ecosystem of the fridge in good condition and free of pathogens thanks to the absorption of ethylene. Achieving this end new habits of responsible consumption are created and thus we contribute with the SDGs 12 that wants to reduce food waste to 50%,” says Marta Pastor. Naturpod is a 100% KM0 product and is delivered in a box with 3 envelopes. Each envelope contains clays that can be placed both on the inner wall of the fridge drawer and on the fryer and which has a month duration. It is a 100% recyclable product made with FSC certified and compostable materials as it can be disposed of with organic waste. It is not invasive with food since it does not give up any type of substance, it only absorbs. After the month of usefulness of the envelope, clay can be used as fertilizer for plants as it is compostable.

It is sold online in all Spain (Península, Islas Baleares, Islas Canarias, Ceuta and Melilla) for 8,90 € + shipping costs, in a case with 3 envelopes and each of them has a duration of one month. It is also present in 100 points distributed between Barcelona, its metropolitan area and Girona. The objective for this 2022 to expand the network of points of sale in physical stores in the rest of Spain.
