Robotic surgery, an option that provides multiple benefits in the treatment of obesity

The World Day of the Fight against Obesity is convened every 12 November with the aim of reducing existing levels of overweight and obesity by 2025. For decades the increase in cases of this disease has not ceased, so it is estimated that up to 2.8 million deaths in the world will rise directly from excess weight or from diseases associated with it, according to ABEX Robotic Excellence

According to data from the European Health Survey in Spain, 16.5 per cent of men over 18 and 15.5 per cent of women suffer from this disease. The causes can be due to both genetic factors and environmental factors. Although genetic factors are determinant, environmental factors must also be taken into account: an individual with genetic predisposition for obesity can avoid it by acquiring a healthy lifestyle.

According to the figures provided by the Ministry of Health, the percentage of obesity between autonomous communities is 13.5% and 19.7% variable, being Andalusia, Galicia, Asturias and Murcia the communities that lead the rate with the highest percentage of this disease.

By sex, percentage Obese men registered is greater than that of obese women in most AC. However, these data may vary from those estimated by other entities such as the Spanish Society of Cardiology, since, according to the Dr. Raquel Sánchez Santos, head of the General Surgery Service of the Hospital Alvaro Cunqueiro de Vigo and president of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Association of Surgeons, the large part of the population does not go to the health system and its real weight is unknown.

Despite that, Dr. Sanchez Santos assures that in recent years a progressive increase in obesity in most developed countries due to the change in eating habits and the decline in physical exercise. It also notes the alarming increase in cases of child obesity.

Robotic surgery as obesity treatment
The use of robotic surgery to address morbid obesity allows to perform all known minimally invasive bariatric surgery techniques, such as the bypass gastric, the vertical gastronomy, the Duodenal crossing, the SADIS, the biliopancreatic derivation or review surgery. Venta de Minerales

Since the start of the robotic bariatric surgery program of the University Hospital Complex of Vigo in October 2021, Dr. Sanchez Santos together with the rest of the team have performed more than a third of the downtown bariatric surgery with the da Vinci robotic system, being the bypass gastric the technique they have performed most often. Dr. Sánchez explains this procedure as the reduction of stomach size accompanied by a leap in the intestine (large or lower aces). “What will cause the patient to feel satisfied by eating little food while absorbing less fat. As a result, there will be a change in metabolism that will help you to better take advantage of food and burn excess fat,” he concludes.

Advantages for the patient
With employment robotic system da Vinci, one of the first systems for minimally invasive surgery taken today at the 4th generation, many can be obtained benefits in such interventions, both for the patient and for the surgeon.

Dr. Sánchez Santos comments that some of the advantages of this surgical technique for the surgeon It's the strength and precision in movements that contributes the robotic system da Vinci in patients suffering morbid superobesity, where the abdominal wall is very thick and more effort is needed to use laparoscopic instruments.

Regarding the patient benefits, ease for tissue mobilization and the realization of intracorporeal sutures allows bariatric surgery to be performed in a way minimally invasive and with great precision. The immersive 3D vision and an extension of up to 10 times achieves optimal results and both the admission time and the postoperative period are reduced significantly, allowing the patient to resume normal life in a few days, while reducing pain, risk of infections or the need for further interventions.
