/COMUNICAE/

The moderate consumption of fruit juice as a complement to the intake of whole or stumbled fresh fruit is advisable due to the nutrients and phytocomponents it provides. In addition, both the packaging and the one produced at home, represent a very important economic impulse for Spain

All the wealth generated by primary plant production is consumed in the domestic market and is also exported, both in fresh and made in the form of juices, preservas or ultra-freezes. Approximately 20% of the production of fruits and vegetables is destined to the transformation, the same percentage as for citrus, which generates a unique opportunity to consume this fruit directly or through juice.

It should be remembered that the fruit and vegetable sector in Spain is one of the most important of the agrifood group, accounting in 2017 for 29% of the Agrarian Final Production and up to 47% of the Vegetal Production. This means that the value of the production of the fruit and vegetable sector exceeded in 2017 the 14,000 million euros, 3% more than in 2016 and 14% more than the average of the last 5 campaigns (2012-2016). In terms of their consumption, they must take into account their nutritional properties and scientific studies published in this respect, where experts consider that consuming 100% fruit juice in a moderate way as a complement to the intake of 3 or more pieces of fresh fruit helps the organism positively. This is due to the fact that both the juice made at home and the 100% packaging contain to a large extent the nutrients present in the fruit from which they are obtained naturally. Plus, lto current legislation does not authorize the addition of sugars and additives to packaged fruit juice. (2)

On the other hand, regardless of water, which contributes to proper hydration, provide minerals, vitamins and a variety of bioactive components, and especially flavonoids such as flavonoids hesperidine and narirutina. Thanks to this and based on controlled intervention studies, daily consumption of fruit juice reduces inflammation3, improves antioxidant status4, helps control glucose5 and does not promote increased body fat.6

Despite these proven facts, both juice and fresh fruits and vegetables are suffering from attacks that damage and misrepresent the benefits of these foods, hurt the producing sectors and disinform the consumer.

From the position of fruit and vegetable producers and the juice industry, respecting the positions of other collectives who claim that the consumption of these products can be harmful, it is requested that before reaching hasty conclusions, it be deepened in scientific studies. Sometimes, due to the methodology or study group, they can lead to error and not resemble reality or other studies carried out on the same subject.

For all of the above mentioned and based on all these arguments from the Valencian Consumer and User Association (AVACU), the Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA), the Union of Small Farmers and Livestocks (UPA), the Federation of Independent Users (FUCI), and the National Civic Union of Consumers and Housewives of Spain (UNAE); We call on the media to raise awareness of negative studies on the effects of the consumption of fruits, vegetables and their transformations in the health of people, because they can have very negative effects on producers and also on consumers who will suffer disinformation.

For his part, Gustavo Samayoa, Chairman of FUCI“We do not know the interests behind this type of information, but they generate a lot of confusion to the consumer and therefore we ask that messages that do not correspond to reality are not disseminated and that they have not been thoroughly revised and consulted with experts in the matter.”

In this same line and to finish, Fernando Móner, President of AVACU He states that “Spain is the country of the world with Japan that arouses greater admiration for its hope and quality of life, and I find it difficult for the citrus that are sometimes attacked to be the subject of serious criticism that must undoubtedly be the object of response by our administrations.”
