14 companies will donate vegan food this December in collaboration with the Madrid Food Bank to vulnerable people
Restaurants, food companies and specialized shops join to donate 100% vegetable food to Christmas. Million Dollar Vegan has asked for help from companies like The NewyorkinaHeura, Pink AlbatrossNarry’s Wholesale Foods, Be Flamboyant, Vegetables, Grin Grin Foods, Cooperativa Vegasun, La Mala Leche, Calabizo, Ideya Verde, Mommus, Quimera Station and the Madrid restaurant Mandarina Plant Based Kitchen that will donate more than a thousand kilos of food.
“Since the coronavirus crisis began, we have donated more than 300,000 vegan meals in 14 countries of the world,” says Paula González, director of the NGO in Spain. “Only here, we donated more than 2,000 full and hot menus for people in need and medical personnel during peak health crisis,” he says. “We talked to the Banco de Alimentos de Madrid and realized that extra reinforcements are always needed for Christmas, so we ask for help from companies, restaurants and vegan food shops to collaborate with the initiative. The answer has been very positive.”
The report The landscape of abandonment: severe poverty in Spainof the European Network against Poverty, estimates that 4.3 million people are in a situation of severe poverty in Spain in 2020. Forty per cent of them are under 30 years of age and only 16 per cent receive help from the administrations. The report still does not reflect the data of the crisis caused by coronavirus, so it is estimated that the number could grow significantly. “Although actions begin today, we encourage other companies that have vegan products to participate,” says González. “We are in this health crisis because of a pandemic caused by the livestock industry and how we treat other animals. We want to show that vegan food is part of the solution and not the problem,” he says.
A month of donations
The "Comparte Vegano" campaign, which is part of the campaign Remove the Pandemics from the Menu, give the shoot-out this December with the donation of 1,000 kilos of food. The beneficiaries are the Banco de Alimentos de Madrid, the anti-racist pantry Besha Wear in Lavapiés, the animal sanctuary The Enchanted Valley of Madrid and the Malagasy association Nada Es Imposible.
In addition, on December 12, a hot Christmas menu will be served in the dining room of the Servants of Jesus in Vallecas. 750 menus where tempeh and quinoa croquettes will be served, a leaflet cake with vegetable meat, pumpkin, mushrooms and bechamel and some ginger cookies that will produce three restaurants of the capital and that complete the sisters with fruit, water and yogurt for the beneficiaries.
Donation points
For those who want to donate food, instead of large surfaces three points have been enabled in Spain so that they can buy products in those stores and they will distribute it to the families that need it. The points are: Vegan Place (Málaga), Fifth Command ( online store) in Madrid and Happy Vegetal (Alicante).
