Norway's image as a great nation with long fishing tradition and fish and seafood production grows among the Spanish. Freshness is one of the characteristics that is most associated with Norwegian products. Among the most well-known and appreciated, the Salmon, the wild premium cod ‘Skrei’ and the fresh cod, explain from the Norwegian Sea Products Council
Did you know that Spain is one of the largest global fish consumers? The Spaniards love the fish, which they acquire almost the same level as other great European and Asian claimants. Norwegian origin is an increasingly determining factor as a purchasing factor thanks to values such as quality, taste, beneficial effects for the health and sustainability of the fishing methods used.
The Norwegian Sea Products Council -organism under the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries - has just published the results of an online consumer survey of 20 to 65 years of age. Ipsoswhich sheds light on the views and behaviors around fish in different countries. From this survey, it follows that 8.5 out of 10 Spanish eat sea productsOnce a week. Spain is the fourth consumer of fish (per person) in Europe, behind Norway, Iceland and Portugal.
Among these, the opinion on the products of Norway among the Spanish progresses adequately. In fact, the recognition of the logo ‘Seafood from Norway’ (Fisheries and Seafood from Norway) in our country reaches its historical maximum. So, the 64% of Spanish consumers between 18 and 65 say they have seen the logo of origin: “This is the historical maximum achieved. To have a perspective, in 2018, the knowledge was 34%”, recalls the director of the Norwegian Sea Products Council in Spain, Björn-Erik Stabell.
“Undoubtedly, the commitment of our sector to the excellence of fish, traceability, food security, linked to the utmost care in the sustainable and responsible management of fisheries – which guarantees the future of the squids in Norway for future generations – are different factors for which we bet, determining when it comes to obtaining such good acceptance in Spain, to which we add the efforts of the Norwegian Sea Products Council to disclose these qualities that enclose our certified products”, said the director.
“From Norwegian Sea Products Council We want consumers to have a high knowledge of the goodies of fish and seafood offered by the Oceans and their contributions to food security and sovereignty. We have a source of protein supply that we must respect, disseminate and promote, always in a sustainable way. Promoting fish culture is essential to the consumer and also has an impact on benefits for both Norwegian and Spanish fishermen,” he said.
According to this survey, the salmon is the most consumed product and more known. 81% of Spaniards are able to identify it without any help. Forty-two percent of the Spanish eat salmon at least once a week, a trend that remains, as consumption remains stable. In fact, 20% of Spanish households claim to eat more salmon than before.
Norway is the origin of the most recognized salmon. Nine out of ten people recognize this country as a salmon producer. That is, “there is almost total identification of the product with its country of origin. Norway’s recognition as its place of origin is also increasing in the rest of the products,” he said. Stabell.
The Skrei is undoubtedly the product that is most being made known in our country. Although their consumption figures are still lower than those of other fish such as salmon, more and more people discover this fish and, above all, they recognize Norway as their country of origin. Thus, 33 per cent of people recognize Norway as the origin of the Skrei compared to 23 per cent a year ago, the same Ipsos survey for the Norwegian Sea Products Council.
Freshness is one of the characteristics that is most associated with Norway's certified products, since, in addition to Salmon and Skrei, Norway's knowledge as a fresh cod producer is the highest in history with 20% (compared to 13% last year).
Global and Spanish sales in May
Meanwhile, the latest export data from Norway ' s sea products in the month of May to all world destinations continue to be unstoppable, reaching historical peaks.
The strong global demand for Norwegian sea products gave an export value in May, which is the second highest in a single month, only surpassed by March of this year. The increase in export prices, mainly for salmon, but also for other species such as trout, cod, coal, eglefino and herring, is the main reason for growth, explained the Acting Executive Director of the Norwegian Sea Products Council, Børge Grønbech.
With regard to Spain, imports of fish and seafood from Norway reached 8,827 tons during the month of May (+27 %) worth 63.8 million euros (+42 %). “This shows the strong position of Norwegian sea products in Spain. It also shows how, through our investments in marketing in Spain, we contribute to increasing the focus on these products and, through that, we boost the category,” concludes Council Director in Spain, Björn-Erik Stabell.
The Norwegian Sea Products Council (NSC) is directly dependent on the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and is responsible for publicizing the differential values of national references.
