Seven out of ten Spaniards abuse food and alcohol in Christmas celebrations. Marian cardo pharmacists compensate for food excesses and help protect the liver

The Spaniards ingest up to 30% more of the calories recommended during Christmas excesses foodstuffs with the food and drink that are committed in the celebrations with family and friends, according to a review of data carried out by the Center for Research on Phytotherapy (INFITO) and the Spanish Society of Diettics and Food Sciences (SEDCA). In addition, a single Christmas dinner can contain up to 1,400 calories which triples the recommended amount.

73% of the Spaniards make between one and four meals or dinners with family or friends during the Christmas holidays, according to INFITO and SEDCA data. “Realizing too abundant meals, high in fats and sugars, together with the consumption of alcoholic beverages, favors the appearance of worse digestions, feeling of discomfort, heaviness or gastrointestinal alterations such as diarrhea, nausea, reflux or symptoms of acidity,” says Andrea Calderón, a SEDCA nutritionist.

Excesses with food and drink can cause stomach swelling, burning, indigestion or nausea, digestive symptoms that can be compensated by the taking of Marian cardo pharmacists. The properties of this medicinal plant contribute to maintaining the functioning of the liver and favor digestion. “The pharmaceutical preparations based on medicinal plants, such as the Marian cardo, help fight the discomfort, burning or feeling of swelling after the very abundant meals,” says Teresa Ortega, professor of Pharmacology at the Complutense University of Madrid and vice president of INFITO.

At Christmas you can fatten between 2 and 5 kilos
If these excesses are carried out on a continuous basis, as in the course of Christmas, “it is harmed to the functioning of the liver, in charge of metabolizing excesses of food and drink, which can cause fatigue, drowsiness and less energy” Calderon explains. Also, according to INFITO and SEDCA data, during the Christmas celebrations you can fatten between 2 and 5 kilos due to the so-called atracones and the excessive consumption of alcohol. Each Christmas meal may contain more than 1,100 calories to which you should add alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, champagne or liquor. In fact, eight out of ten Spaniards claim that they exceed during the Christmas weeks, which has a negative impact on their digestive health.

“A celebration day like Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve is usually eaten up to 200% more of the usual calories and even triple the recommended calories,” says the nutritionist. For example, according to INFITO and SEDCA data, Cantabria is one of the autonomous communities where more calories are consumed on these dates, as more than 1,400 calories can be eaten since the typical Christmas menu is composed of chochinillo or baked, caracoles to the mountain and desserts, such as torrijas or mugs.

Marian meat to protect the liver
An alternative to combat the symptoms of dietary excesses is the pharmaceutical preparations based on Marian cardo, a medicinal plant that favors the proper functioning of the digestive system and the protection of the liver. This is due to its high content in silimarin, a natural antioxidant and hepatoprotector, which helps to compensate the toxicity generated, among other things, by alcohol abuse.

In fact, the use of the marine cardo is approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for symptomatic relief of digestive disorders, feeling of fullness and indigestion and to maintain the good functioning of the liver. In the words of Teresa Ortega, “in these cases, the taking of pharmaceutical preparations of Marian cardo, with the required standards, favors the functioning of the digestive and liver system, among other therapeutic benefits.” However, in order to ensure the quality of the preparations, a necessary basis for their effective and safe use, it is best to go to a pharmacy and follow the indications of the pharmacist, a health professional who will advise on the characteristics and disorders of each person.
