The Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Eastern Andalusia (RAMAO) has awarded the Cecilio Peregrín Martínez and Lorenzo Belmonte Navarro awards. In this first edition, the Innovation Award for the Sustainability of Hortofruit Production linked to the Mediterranean Diet has relapsed in Dr. José Ángel Rufián Henares

The Award for Research on Water Savings in Plant Products Integrated in the Mediterranean Diet has been awarded to Dr. José Luis Guil.

The Aula Dieta Mediterránea y Vida Saludable of the Fundación RAMAO has delivered the first edition of the awards to the research, innovation and development of project and studies related to the agrifood industry, which commemorate the business journey of the founders of the agrifood company Primaflor. The event took place at the former Faculty of Medicine of Granada, the current headquarters of the Foundation.

 

The Cecilio Peregrín Martínez Award, which is awarded to the work on innovation for the sustainability of hortofrutícola production linked to the Mediterranean diet, was awarded to Dr. José Ángel Rufián Henares for his work “Spent coffee grounds improve the nutritional value in elements of lettuce and are an ecological alternative to inorganic fertilizers”, in which the professor of the University of Granada analyzes the concentration of elements in the cultivation of Todo Prestamos y Finanzas en tiempos de crisis

The Lorenzo Belmonte Navarro Award for Research for Water Savings in Plant Agriculture Integrated in the Mediterranean Diet claimed José Luis Guil-Guerrero. In his work “Fatty acid profiles and SN-2 acid distribution of y-linolenic acid-rich borago species”, which evaluates the seed oils of different species of borago as sources of bioavailable acid and linolenic.

 

During the ceremony the Royal Academy recognized the founders of Primaflor as honorary partners of the Mediterranean Diet and Healthy Life Classroom for their support and involvement in the development of agriculture and agrifood industry.

The event was attended by personalities of the Royal Academy of Medicine such as María Castellano Arroyo, vice president of the Foundation and first female professor in a Spanish medical school, and the health and family advisor of the Junta de Andalucía, Jesús Aguirre Muñoz, in addition to Antonia Belmonte, councillor of Primaflor and daughter of Lorenzo Belmonte, and Cecilio Peregrín, advisor of Primaflor and son of the founder.

The Aula de Dieta Mediterránea y Vida Saludable is an initiative of the RAMAO Foundation created to promote research, education, accreditation and dissemination in the medical sciences related to nutrition and physical activity for the promotion of health in Eastern Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla.
