Flowing rural depopulation has become one of the great challenges of Spanish society. Inequalities between large cities or more populated areas and provinces and municipalities that have been losing population are becoming more and more pronounced, and many rural areas have seen how public services are increasingly cut. In Spain, more than 85% of the population is concentrated in less than 20% of the territory. The rural areas lose, according to the INE, about five inhabitants every hour in Aragon, Galicia, Extremadura and, above all, in Castile and Leon, the largest community on the surface and the one that loses the most population: 125,000 people in the last decade. In addition, 48% of the municipalities have a population density of less than 12.5 inhabitants per km2, threshold from which the European Union considers density to be low.
These figures, coupled with the loss of public services, such as education and health, in addition to the lack of employment opportunities, are the basis of the mobilizations by the “Spain Empty”, a popular concept based on the essay by Sergio del Molino to speak of the populated Spain, which had its peak in the demonstration of last March 31 in Madrid.
Currently, the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation supports in Spain 15 projects that help to recover rural areas, generate employment opportunities and facilitate population stability. In addition, the Foundation seeks to raise awareness of the most sustainable practices to promote universal access to sustainable food, respectful to people and ecosystems, as well as the development of Citizen Art to strengthen social cohesion and the capacity to mobilize against contemporary challenges.
“The projects we support in Sustainable Food and Citizen Art have the vocation to promote a social transformation of the society in which they develop, and 15 of them directly impact the rural environment to generate development opportunities,” he explains. ‘Our projects, our commitments’

Citizen Art
The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation also supports various programs from the line of action of Citizen Art, the driving force of citizenship to develop a sensitive and critical look on the world and to strengthen the cohesion of society, always with the utmost respect for diversity. “Many of the projects that we support bring value to the territory, preserve rural traditions, knowledge and cultures, education and rural knowledge, and incite transformatively into the population, bringing together different artistic disciplines and protecting cultural heritage,” he says. With the collaboration of all the projects of Sustainable Food and Citizen Art, the Foundation collects in a participatory way the useful learnings to share with society in order to generate greater impact and increase the number of initiatives of this type. In addition to its grant program, the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation develops a social impact investment program in which it selects and accompanies social and solidarity economy projects in both lines of action. It can also develop projects or programmes on its own initiative or in conjunction with other actors.
