The Advanced Neurology Center (CNA) ensures that most cases of ictus or cancer dysphagia have cure with proper treatment. They indicate that about 90% of people suffering from this disorder are neither diagnosed nor properly treated

A total of two million people in Spain havedysphagia, a disease that consists of the difficulty to swallow, whether solid and/or liquid foods or even the saliva itself that occurs due to a structural or functional affectation of one or more phases of swallowing

In the framework of the Day of Disphagia, which is held on Monday, December 12, the logo of the phone rehabilitation service Advanced Neurology Centre (CNA), Anelise Sanchis, has emphasized that “disphagia is a disorder that, for different and varied reasons, can affect people at any age and that their early diagnosis and proper treatment are essential for them not to have serious consequences.”

According to Sanchis, one in 17 people will suffer a problem of dysphagia throughout their lives. The prevalence of dysphagia is estimated at between 2 and 16% of the population, and it has even been observed that about 90% of the people who suffer from this difficulty in swallowing are neither diagnosed nor properly treated.

Dysphagia has health consequences, which have a significant impact on the quality of life of people, as it is manifested from respiratory complications, dehydration, malnutrition, or a sudden problem related to infections, mainly respiratory or urinary, and even episodes of asphyxiation that can lead to death.

“It is a very common disorder that can arise at any time in life and that affects especially the elderly,” said the expert, who has insisted that this condition is aggravated at Christmases as “the copious meals are more abundant and in which the menus are less suited and personalized.”

Therefore, “it is important not to lower the guard and to have caution above all with the dishes that present mixed textures with solid and liquid products at the same time, as they are much more complicated to swallow and may lead to their difficulty to possible grabs,” he said. Among the main observable clinical manifestations can appear drool, food remains in the mouth, cough while eating, feel of drowning, nasal regurgitation, arcadas or pain when swallowing, light choking or fever without any apparent reason. The dysphagia of the oropharyngeal area, in which the swallowing of liquids is most affected, covers 80% of all dysphagia.

In addition, the difficulty in swallowing is present in patients who have suffered ictus, degenerative diseases, cerebral palsy or cancer.

The Advanced Neurology Center (CNA) thanks to this specialized unit is achieving great achievements with people affected by dysphagia thanks to the individualized and personalized study of each patient and determining the personalized treatment that each case needs.

A study and treatment carried out by a multidisciplinary team of more than 40 professionals involved in neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, neurophysiologists, physiotherapists, nurses, logops and occupational therapists.

The aim is to work on the rehabilitation of the after-effects of surgery or the consequences of a person suffering from cancer or any of the above-mentioned situations and the prevention of some side effects of treatment, through an interdisciplinary team that evaluates all possibilities.

To rehabilitate the patient's ability to safely swallow, the logopeda may indicate sensitivity exercises and improve muscle and oral performance during the treatment of neurogenic dysphagia. Postal adjustments may also be recommended to avoid the entry and aspiration of food in the airways.

The specialized logopeda in this area is qualified to act in the prevention, evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders in all life cycles, prioritizing patient well-being, minimizing risks and maximizing health-related benefits.

In any case, the medical group “the suspension, indication of alternative way of feeding or release of nutrition by mouth are conditioned to the evaluation of the logopeda, in discussion with the interdisciplinary team”.

The Advanced Neurology Center It has its headquarters in Seville with more than 900 square meters, becoming the largest extrahospital neurological center in the country, and that together with the satellite headquarters in Huelva, Chiclana de la Frontera and Malaga, they carry out more than 35,000 consultations a year with a personalized and continued follow-up to the patient's service.
