Immunonutrition, according to nutritionists, is the branch of nutrition that studies the relationship between nutrients and immunity. The immune system serves to limit the access of microbes to the body, thus preventing them from growing and generating diseases. According to one Harvard Health Publishing February 2021 There is a tangible connection between that immune system and food.

This Harvard article states that having a healthy life is the first step in having a properly functioning immune system. Having a healthy life is related, according to this same publication, with a high intake of fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, sleeping enough, not abusing alcohol or minimizing stress. Therefore, through the Annual Panel of Habits, Herbalife Nutrition has wanted to check whether Spaniards are or not immunonutrients and what their health status is in general lines.

The Spaniards try to lead a healthy life
According to the Herbalife Nutrition poll, it can be concluded that the Spaniards try to lead a healthy life since, of the respondents, 78% ensures to follow a balanced diet, 90% drinks water daily, 90% consumes at least 2 or 3 times per week vegetables and 70% performs sport at least once a week. The self-perception of the state of health of the Spaniards in the last study on health in Spain[1] also corroborates this reflection, since 75.5% of the population considers that their state of health is good or very good.

However, these attempts to lead a healthy lifestyle may not be enough. According to a study[2] This same year, Spain is the fourth European country with a higher percentage of sedentary population: 15% declares not to do any physical exercise and 59% would want to practice more sport, but it cannot because of lack of time or money or weather conditions. Another factor that can put doubt on the good doing of the Spaniards has been, without doubt, the pandemic, whose impact has been noticed physically, since since the beginning of the health crisis, the Spaniards have gained a mean of 5.7 kilos[3].

3 out of 4 Spaniards have a balanced diet
78% of those surveyed by Herbalife Nutrition ensures a balanced diet on a daily basis. Among this percentage are, to a greater extent, women, the high social class and those who have higher education who consider that they carry this type of diet healthier and more balanced on a daily basis. On the contrary, young people, the lower social class and people with a low level of education are the ones who have the worst food.

Oil, dairy and fruit, the daily basis of the Spanish diet
During this 2021, more than 50% of respondents claim to consume olive oil daily (65%); milk, yogurt and cheese (56%); and fruit (53%). A somewhat lower percentage, almost 40%, ensures that food such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta or potatoes is eaten every day. As far as daily intake is concerned, the least consumed is fish and seafood, while 34% of respondents do not buy either beer or wine. For its part, vegetables and vegetables appear at least 2 or 3 times a week in the dishes of almost 90% of the population, while more than 31% maintain that they are consumed every day.

The foods consumed are fundamental because they can alter the state of health. As stated by the President of the Herbalife Nutrition Institute David Heber “the most extensive part of the immune system – approximately 70% of this – is close to the intestines and oversees the intake of food and the way the body uses them.” This means that following a balanced diet is fundamental. Stop. to strengthen the immune system It is necessary, according to Heber, to consume protein-rich foods; vitamins and phytonutrients; probiotics and prebiotics; and omega-3 fatty acids.

90% of respondents drink water daily
In general, the Spaniards drink more than a litre and a half a day. More than half of the people surveyed (51%) consume between 1 and 2 litres a day, while only 3 out of 10 respondents claim to eat less than one litre a day. By geographical areas, the north of the country is where the least percentage of the population drinks water, unlike the east. By age strips, those between 55 and 65 years of age are those who claim, to a greater extent, not to consume water.

From Herbalife Nutrition they remember that drinking water is essential because it contributes to the proper functioning of the body, helps to transport oxygen, improves digestion, regulates blood pressure and heart rate, maintains healthy organs, helps remove bacteria from the bladder and leads nutrients to the whole body. Do not drink water, on the contrary, can cause migraines, fatigue, hypertension, kidney problems or joint pain, among other conditions.

Vegetables, vegetables and fruits, shopping cart queens
If the baskets of the purchase of the Spaniards were analyzed, vegetables (11 %), fruit (10.5%) and dairy (8.7%). The products that the Spanish buy the least, on the contrary, are the pastries (2.3%), the appetizers (3.2%) and the nuts (3.6%).

If the purchase basket is divided by sex, men buy more red meats and potatoes, while women include in their basket more vegetables, fruits, milk, yogurts, cheeses and derivatives. If you look at the shopping basket by age, the younger population (18-24 years old), consume more rice and pasta, while intake of fruits, vegetables and legumes increases proportionally to age. Similarly, the study shows that respondents with higher and higher incomes have a more complete and varied shopping basket, which also allows them to follow a more balanced diet.

Increases the percentage of Spaniards performing sports
With respect to 2020, the percentage of Spaniards who practice sport has increased slightly – a 0.54% more – and currently 7 out of 10 Spaniards are sporting at least once a week. Men practice more sport than women, 13% more, and also dedicate more hours to them. The population strip that less sport practises is the one between the ages of 18 and 24, and the most sporting are adults aged 45 to 54 (76%). Finally, they are those of the middle class or the unemployed (a 4% more than the employees) who practice most.

Exercise improves cardiovascular health, reduces blood pressure and protects, according to Harvard's study, against a variety of diseases. It also contributes equally to general health and therefore to a healthy immune system.
