Veganism is an expanding movement. In Europe there are already more than 75 million vegan and vegetarian people, and it is one of the fastest-growing consumer segments in recent years, especially during the pandemic. Experts ensure that the plant-based market, focused on increasing the consumption of vegetable products, is a rising trend. In this context it is born Vegan Food Club, the new Spanish startup that produces 100% vegan and sustainable food dishes and delivers them home, with the aim of promoting a healthier diet in society causing the least negative impact on the planet.
“We do not believe that the plant-based movement is just a fashion, people are increasingly aware of the deficiencies of the current food system and the impact that they consume on the planet. It is a social consciousness that has developed over the last 40 years, and it is crucial to turn the greatest challenge of our generation: climate change,” he points out. Pablo Alcolea, CEO of Vegan Food Club and co-founder of the company together with Lucas González-Guija (CMO) and Rodolfo Castro (Executive Chef).
This foodtech, born in Valencia in 2020, wants to show that prepared food can also be healthy, and makes available to consumers a vegan home food service, at an affordable and environmentally friendly price. Its offer is suitable for any consumer profile that is interested in maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. In fact, at present only half of its customers declare themselves vegan or vegetarian.
“Any average adult can take a 100% plant-based diet and have all the nutrients your body needs. It is shown that taking enough proteins of vegetable origin and with the correct supplementation of certain compounds (such as amino acids, vitamin B12 and D, and omega 3), the consumer fully covers its basic food needs, and will have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity or diabetes,” he says. Lucas González- Guija.
Vegan Food Club offers flexible, weekly or monthly subscription plans, without any kind of permanence, and can pause for weeks when the customer wants it. The menus are received on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the gastronomic offer is changing every week. The elaborations are created by your own chef, Rodolfo Castro, which carries out an important commitment to innovation, designing new dishes that are tested and verified by testers before offering them to the user community. Currently, its two best valued dishes are vegetable lasagna and mango curry.
The foodtech serves all of Spain. In its first six months of life in the market has served more than 15,000 dishes, half of them in the last three months. Its closest goal is to extend its business to Portugal, to land in the French and German markets in the next two years.
A company committed to the planet
Changing a more carnivorous diet to a plant-based has a huge positive impact on the planet. In fact, according to a recent study from Oxford University, following a vegan diet is the most effective way a average consumer has to minimize their carbon footprint, which can be reduced to 73%.
Vegan Food Club currently delivers all its dishes in recyclable packaging, and its goal is to bet on biodegradable and/or compostable plastics as soon as there is an alternative that meets packaging needs. Meanwhile, he just started a collaboration with Plastic Bank to neutralize the volume of containers generated by the company, collecting from the sea an amount of plastics equivalent. In addition, it has a carbon neutral logistics supplier and all the energy sources used by the company come from 100% renewable sources. Its goal is to become a B Corp company in 2022.
